This document will be used to assist your form tutor when
they write your reference. If your tutor claims that you are
exceptionally ready for University but have no evidence for
this they sound dishonest. This booklet will function as a
reference guide for your tutor to see how prepared you
really are for University study.
PREP matters
What does this mean
Philosophy What is the nature of your subject and why is it important?
Examples might be in Sociology = the debate between structural and action based theories.
In Science = What distinguishes scientific knowledge from other ways of knowing
In English = is the purpose of English literature to create beauty or novels that provoke deep thinking or
to bring social change?
In History reading around
1) Carr, E.H. (1961) 'What is history.
2) Evans, R. (1997) In defence of History

I suggest you look at PREP boars or ask subject specialists if you are unsure.
Research All Universities want to see is that you can read critically at Undergraduate level. So read a book from a
University reading list from cover to cover to show you have the ability to do this and then give your
opinion briefly on the work.
Experience What have you done in your subject area in terms of work experience, visits to museums, galleries etc.
Best example is probably Tanpreet, wanting to study economics so goes on lots of work placements at
banks.

This also includes any competitions you have entered. Its never too late to do this so have a look on the
PREP boards for some opportunities if you haven't already.
Personality How can you prove you have the characteristics needed for University study? E.g. organisation, diligent,
critical thinker. Good example of this is balancing a part time job with 6
th
form showing you can mange
your time effectively. Being a prefect suggests you have the capacity to excel in her/ his studies as well
as balance this with other responsibilities.

Education
Education- Why
not?

Korean agenda and governing is very extreme. Kim Jon Il rules
Korea and the Koreans are made to worship their leader and
are forced to act in a certain way or they face serious
consequences. Media and outsiders never get to completely
information or image the Korean authorities false Koreans to
give to outsiders
Documentary highlighting the extremem poverty and
unsanitary living conditions the aborigine Australians live in

Documentary covering the amount of unemployed graduates
in china and the extent to which universities and colleges
have turned into companies that want to exploit the poor
rural villagers
Research

Geography Lecture in
Queen Marys College

The Geography course consists of mostly coursework and fieldwork. Fieldwork involves
travelling to different areas, based on the type of geography Im into- I could study
development and human geography in East London and in Mumbai, India
Experience
Name of competition Briefly describe the nature
of the competition
Feedback/ success?
Competitions
Competitions organised by the Universities you are applying for are especially good
Characteristic/ habits
shown e.g. organised,
confident etc.
Evidence of this?
Personality
You dont have to use this to write your UCAS statement. However, it is for me
the best method.

Note - Flowery anecdotes about childhood interests in History, Geography or
Mathematics are fine but do very little to make you stand out; quality
experience, analysis of research do.
Structure Suggestions
Intro

Philosophy discussed or implicitly noted when you
introduce the statement

Para 1 (and) 2

Discuss ideas that you found interesting, especially if
some sort of disagreement emerges from this. They
will doubtless ask you to discuss this during interview
so make sure you know that area inside out

Para 3
Experience

Work experience summer schools debate
competition etc. Explain how these make you suitable
for University study

Para 4

Personality
Show how you are organized, responsible etc.
e.g. I play guitar to grade 8, volunteer in a homeless
shelter and sing in west end show therefore I have the
organizational skills needed to balance my
undergraduate study.
Conclude Say how your academic ability, wide reading beyond
the school curriculum and experiences and personal
attributes make you so well suited to University study
