What is Knowledge?
How do we know what we know?
Define knowledge alternatively
Supported by evidence (usually empirical)
Conceive knowledge claims in a
probabilistic sense
Knowledge is a matter of societal acceptance

What is Knowledge?
Research supports for improvement.
This requires an ability: to identify problems,
to address these, and search for potential
solutions.
This process involves the addition of knowledge.
Addition of Knowledge
1. Addressing gaps in knowledge
2. Expanding knowledge to new ideas or practices
3. Replicating knowledge in different markets
4. Adding voices of individuals to society

How is Knowledge Acquired?
Role of science plays a major role is
acquisition of knowledge.

Where Science meets norms related to
societal norms, expectations, values, etc.

Thus science equals any scholarly
attempt at acquiring knowledge

Knowledge sources
Observation : Experiments/measurements

The Reason : Mathematics/logical reasoning

Intuition

Authority

(Divine) Revelation

There are ways to acquire the knowledge
How do we contribute to knowledge ?
As we go ahead with our classes and reading we
shall understand what is knowledge and how do
we generate add knowledge to the Industry.

Before that we need to understand what are
OLOGIES?

OLOGIES is a discipline of study, as indicated by
having the -ology suffix.

OLOGIES are four key terms for concepts of
knowledge generation process

.
1. Ontology : is the study of the nature of
reality. Its a systematic account of
Existence. Nature of the world around us.

2. Epistemology : (Epistemology is a
knowledge science) Epistemology is what
we can know about reality. The way of
understanding and interpreting how we
know what we know.

3. Axiology: (Axiology studies mainly two kinds of value )
What are you trying to explain ? How you
are trying to predict the world ?

4. Methodology : How you are going to go
about your research? Methodology is
dependent on first three.
