Course Outcome
By the end of semester, you should be able to:

Explain the elementary relationships between structure,
properties and performance of materials

Distinguish the various classes of materials (metals,
ceramics, polymers and composites) , their fundamental
chemical and structural nature and processing methods

Utilize the knowledge on structure and properties of
materials to solve real engineering-based case studies

Program Outcome
PO1: ability to acquire and apply knowledge of science and
engineering fundamentals in chemical engineering and related areas
PO2: ability to communicate effectively, in verbal and written forms,
with both technical and non-technical groups
PO3: acquired in-depth technical competence in chemical
engineering and related disciplines
PO4: ability to identify, formulate and solve chemical engineering
and related problems
PO5: ability to utilize systems approach to design and evaluate
operational performance the need for and engage in lifelong learning

PO6: understanding of the principles of design for sustainable
development
PO7: understanding of professional, ethical and safety issues in
engineering practices, the responsibilities and commitment to them
PO8: ability to function effectively as an individual and in a group
with the capacity to be a leader or manager
PO9: understanding and responsive to the social, cultural, global and
environmental responsibilities of a professional engineer
PO10: ability to recognize the need for and engage in lifelong
learning

Chapter 1: Learning
objectives
Describe the subject of materials science and
engineering as a scientific discipline
Cite the primary classification of solid materials
Give distinctive features of each group of
materials
Cite one material from each group. Give some
applications of different types of materials
Materials Science and
Engineering
Internal structure,
properties and
processing of
materials
Conversion into
products needed
or desired by
society
Why study materials
science and engineering?
To be able to select a material for a given use based
on considerations of cost and performance.

To understand the limits of materials and the change
of their properties with use.

To be able to create a new material that will have
some desirable properties.

?
Metal
Combination of metallic elements
Good conductors
Not transparent
Shiny appearance
Strong & deformable (ductile)
Examples steel, aluminium, copper etc.

Metal

Ceramics and Glasses
Compounds between metallic and nonmetallic
elements (noncrystalline structure)
Oxides, nitrides and carbides
Insulative

Polymer
Long molecular chains based on organics
(carbon containing precursors)
Extremely flexible
Low density, lightweight
Drawbacks lower strength, lower T
melt
,
higher chemical reactivity
Examples: polyethylene, acrylics, nylon
Polymer
Accepted from Callister 7e.
Composites
Two or more materials integrated to form a
new one
Combination of the best characteristics of
each component material
Examples : Fiberglass, concrete, wood
