1976

VISION

To achieve optimal nutrition of
vulnerable segments of population
such as women of reproductive
age, children, adolescent girls and
elderly by 2020.

MISSION
To enable food and nutrition security conducive to
good health, growth & development and increase
productivity through dedicated research, so as to
achieve the national nutrition goals set by the
government of India in the national nutrition policy.

OBJECTIVES
1. To identify various dietary and nutrition problems
prevalent among different segments of the
population in the country.
2. To continuously monitor diet and nutrition
situation of the country.
3. To evolve effective methods of management and
prevention of nutritional problems.

OBJECTIVES
4. To conduct operational research connected with
planning and implementation of national nutrition
programmes.
5. To dovetail nutrition research with other health
programmes of the government.
6. Human resource development in the field of
nutrition.

OBJECTIVES
7. To disseminate nutrition information.
8. To advise governments and other organisations on
issues relating to nutrition

INTRODUCTION
Food And Drug Toxicology Research Centre (FDTRC) in 1971
National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB) in 1972 and
National Centre for Laboratory Animal Sciences (NCLAS) in
1976

FDTRC
Food & Drug Toxicology Research Centre
to investigate food borne disease outbreaks and
undertake toxicological evaluation of foods and
drugs.
research in fungal toxins, pesticide residues, food
additives, heavy metals, pharmacokinetics , diet &
chronic degenerative disorders and nutrient-drug
interactions.

NNMB
National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB)
Dynamic database on diet & nutrition , ICMR
established the National Nutrition Monitoring
Bureau (NNMB) in the year 1972, with a Central
Reference Laboratory at NIN
and units in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat,
Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra,
Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

NCLAS
National Centre for Laboratory Animal
Sciences (NCLAS)
NCLAS breeds and supplies pathogen free
animals to various research institutes for
experimental research.
Developed three rat mutant models
namely WNIN/Igt, WNIN/ob, WNIN/ob-Igt,
to serve as animal models in drug
development for chronic diseases.

THE MOA OF NIN
ACHIEVEMENTS

Protein Energy Malnutrition (PEM)
Exploded the protein myth and
highlighted calorie gap as the
major bottleneck for healthy
growth of children.
This far-reaching observation
helped in deciding the recipes for
supplementary feeding
programmes (SNP, MDM, and ICDS)
for vulnerable groups.

ACHIEVEMENTS
Developed simple and sensitive biochemical
indicators for assessment of vitamin and
aetiopathogenic mechanisms of various nutritional
deficiency syndromes.
Growth monitoring
Established growth norms for Indian children.

ACHIEVEMENTS
Emphasized the importance of growth monitoring for
early diagnosis and appropriate management of
protein energy malnutrition.
Proved that the growth potential of Indian children is
similar to those of developed countries.
Food composition and dietary requirements

ACHIEVEMENTS
Generated database on nutritive
values of over 650 Indian foods, which
is used by various national
organizations, planners and academic
research institutions
Formulated Recommended Dietary
Allowances (RDA) for Indians.
Developed food based Dietary
Guidelines for Indians

ACHIEVEMENTS
Paved the way for formulation of national policies on
food, agriculture and edible oils.
Food based approach to combat micronutrient
deficiencies
Developed fortification methods with Iron and Iodine
for prevention of IDA and IDD.
Demonstrated its beneficial effects in preventing the
reduction in haemoglobin levels among girls.

ACHIEVEMENTS
Developed simple kits to check the content of Iron
and Iodine in fortified salt.

ACHIEVEMENTS
NIN Developed (NSS-Triple A cycle of Assessment,
Analysis and Action) to serve as an early warning
system about nutrition problems.
NSS helps to initiate appropriate strategies to ensure
optimal nutrition to the at risk groups.
Helps to assess the extent of achievement of targets
by providing in-built mechanism of evaluation
against the targets.

ACHIEVEMENTS
National nutrition programmes
Initiated national prophylaxis programme against
blindness due to vitamin A deficiency, Covering 30
million pre-school children in India.
Instrumental in formulation of national anaemia
prophylaxis programme to supplement pregnant and
lactating women and pre-school children

ACHIEVEMENTS
Helped to improve nutritional status of pregnant and
lactating women and birth weight of infants.
Human resource development
Trained over 1600 health professionals from 35
countries.
International agencies such as WHO and FAO
recognized NIN as a Centre for excellence in food
quality, safety and nutrition

FDTRC
Demonstrated that malnutrition alters drug kinetics
and suggested to change drug dose in relation to
severity of nutritional status.
Helped to formulate National Nutrition Programmes
for prevention of malnutrition.
Recommended appropriate immunization schedules
based on the studies on nutrition, infection and
interactions.

FDTRC
Beneficial effects of spices
Demonstrated beneficial effects of commonly
consumed spices such as Fenugreek seeds as dietary
adjuvant and recommended for the management of
diabetes and hyperlipidaemia.
Turmeric in chemo prevention of cancer.
Food safety Identified the causative factors of food
borne diseases like epidemic dropsy

FDTRC
Developed simple methods to estimate aflatoxin
contaminants in food grains at field level.
Demonstrated simple methods for removal of
neurotoxin in Lathyrus sativus.
Developed food safety norms for street foods and
public catering.

NNMB
National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB)
Assessed dietary intake of individuals, house holds
and nutritional profiles of different communities
through periodic surveys of NNMB in 10 states.
Helped to formulate National Nutrition Policy and
evaluate several National Nutrition programmes.

NNMB
Suggested strategies to identify high risk pregnancies
in rural areas of India. These were included in the
National Reproductive and Child Health Programme

OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS
NIN scientists received national and international
awards for their research contributions.
Published over 3000 scientific publications in peer-
reviewed national and international journals with
high impact factors

NIN
Publishes periodicals in different languages and over
20 popular publications on food health and nutrition.

CLINICAL FACILITIES
Apart from laboratory facilities, NIN has Nutrition
Units for outpatients and inpatients in three local
hospitals viz., Osmania General Hospital, Niloufer
Hospital and Govt. Maternity Hospital at Hyderabad
to carry out research on clinical aspects of nutrition.
There is a Metabolic Unit in the Institute for carrying
out metabolic studies on volunteers.

COMMUNICATION & COMPUTATION FACILITIES
Infrastructure facilities- for fast retrieval and efficient
communication of information through Internet and
E-mail facilities.
The Central Reference Laboratory at NIN has several
computers installed to compute and store the data
collected by NNMB from its 10 State Units
computers to statistically analyse the data generated
under various scientific projects.
