SURFACE PREPARATION
Why is it so important?
Poor surface preparation is
the most frequent cause of
premature coatings failure.
Surface preparation is the
most important operation of
a painting project.

HOW TO APPLY PRIMER
Make sure Mukand Approved primer are used eg:-Shalimar, Berger,
Chembond, Morson.
Proper mixture of Thinner with Primer depending upon Brush Painting
or Spraying Painting.
Clean off all loose paint, dirt and grease from the surface of your
metal.
Apply zinc-chromate primer(Synthetic Enamel) after ensuring all dirt,
grease etc are cleaned.
Double coat with primer. Because metal is extremely prone to the
effects of oxidization, more primer is often better for the metal. Not
only will it help the top coat of paint stick to the surface, but will also
make the metal less vulnerable to the effects of time, especially rust,
far into the future.
Recommended Drying time should be given before applying Second
Coat.
Good quality brushes of different sizes to be used. Small brush to be
used for painting corners and small openings

Testing Of Painted Surface
We can chech DFT of any paint which is
applyied with DFT Meter
This are various types of testing done to check
the DFT of painting
1) Pull Off Gage
a) Pen Type Coating Thickness Gage
b) Pull Off Adhersion Test
c) Cross Hatch Adhersion Test
2) Electronic Gage

Pull-off Gage
A magnet is attached to one
end of a pivoting balanced
arm and connected to a
calibrated hairspring
By rotating the dial with a
finger, the spring increases
the force on the magnet and
pulls it from the surface.
These Gage are easy to use
and are safe in explosive
environments and are
commonly used by painting
contractors.
Typical tolerance is 5%
Pen Type Coating Thickness
Meter
It is Pull Off type
used to measure
Magnetic Steel
Surface Only .
Reading taken
where the magnetic
effect is lost
Coatest make is
very cheaper and
easy to handel.
Pull-Off Adhesion Testing
Simple to use, quantitative range giving a
definitive adhesion value, ideal for the
laboratory or field on flat or curved
substrate applications. A pull off adhesion
test determines the coating adhesion by
measuring the pull force required to
remove the dolly from the coating. Tensile
Dollies (or stubs) are glued to the coating
and, when the adhesive has cured, the
force required to pull the coating off the
surface is measured.
Pull-Off Adhesion Testing Gages
Cross Hatch Adhresion Test
Cross Hatch adhesion tester is a fast, low cost,
visual comparison method for paint and
powder coatings up to a thickness of 250m
(10mils) in order to evaluate the coating
adhesion. The coating is cut into small
squares, thereby reducing lateral bonding,
and the coating adhesion assessed against
ISO, ASTM or Corporate Standards
Cross Hatch Adhresion Test
Electronic Gage
It can be used to measured
either magnetic steel
surfaces or non-magnetic
metal surfaces such as
stainless steel or aluminum
using a digital coating
thickness gauge
