Presentation By: Harshit Bhandari Kartik Bhati Are we world-class ? 75 percent engineering students in India are unemployable NASSCOM
14.97% of IT specialization students can write a simple program, while 70% of them show theoretical understanding
A mechanical engineer may actually not know how to change a part of a machine Sahasrabudhu said during a panel discussion at the sixth Higher Education Summit
Incompetent faculty rendering engineering graduates unemployable-The Indian Express
LACUNA Outdated learning - Not staying in touch with the industry could be one reason why engineering students are not relevant to todays industry.
Theory vs Practice - The current education system poses a chasm between theory and practice. Very little of what is learnt at college can be put into practice in everyday life.
Exam culture - Students lay emphasis on only the exam and not on learning the subject. This results in weak fundamentals, and hence, industry irrelevance.
Lack of exposure - The amount of exposure given to students about the industry is also very little.
Bad career matching - Weather or not the student has the aptitude for the stream is not taken into account, resulting in uninterested engineering candidates, who havent taken to their subjects as much as they should have, making them irrelevant to the industry.
What is need to be done ? Rigorous practical hands on skill oriented training. Internship for longer period with industry with machine, design, creative technical work. Teaching-learning process- less spoon feeding and more through self learning and participation learning & problem solving Assessment evaluation- Problem solving and not asking theory question
Engineering colleges faculties to do consultancy and involve students to work on those real life projects. Industry and education institution collaboration. Getting curriculum updated with industry specific demands Improve the skill by imparting skill on core competencies skill Engineering Colleges to do more research and publish in international and national journals, exploitable patents and innovative products. The Path to Becoming a World-Class Engineer begins with undergraduate study and requires a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.
World-Class Engineers are: SOLIDLY GROUNDED-In fundamentals of their discipline and are committed to lifelong learning. TECHNICALLY BROAD-Conversant in multiple technical disciplines. They design solutions that span business functions such as finance, marketing, legal, and manufacturing. GLOBALLY ENGAGED-Understand the worldwide nature of their profession and are sensitive to the speed required to keep pace in geographically and culturally diverse environments. ETHICAL-Uphold the highest ethical standards, readily identify, and carefully address, ethical issues that arise in their professional lives.
INNOVATIVE-Develop precise definitions of complex problems and formulate sustainable solutions by thinking creatively across technical, business, social, and environmental dimensions.
