The process of art of carving or molding.
DIFFERENCE OF PAINTING AND SCULPTURE PAINTING SCULPTURE - Two-dimensional art - Three- dimensional art - Relies on pigment - Actual form for its completion space and texture ELEMENTS SUBJECT - tells what the sculpture is all about. - best avenue an artist can express his idea/emotion. - it varies depending on the period a man exists. SPACE - The area where the artist work.
PROCESS OF CREATION SUBTRACTION - The artist, using his chisels, hammers, deducts parts from the medium to form a designed image with perfect lines and angles.
EXAMPLE: carving of stone and wood
ADDITION - The construction of a figure by putting together bits of clay or by welding together metal parts to create an image.
COMBINED MATERIALS -This method happens when a combination of small pieces of materials such as plastic or moist clay is worked and modeled into desired form which may then be subjected to intense heat to produce a ceramic known as teracotta. Wire, rods and plates may also be combined by soldering or welding.
OF Sculpture EGYPTIAN SCULPTURE - Egyptian sculpture and all Egyptian art was based on the belief in a life after death.
-Characterized by sculptures from stone placed on thombs of important persons or temple of powerful rulers.
EXAMPLES: pyramids, the great pyramids of giza THE SPHINX The most colossal sculpture of the ancient world is the Egyptian sphinx. The great lion with a human face is carved from the centre of a limestone quarry, after the tons of stone which once surrounded it have been hacked and dragged away to form the greatest of the three nearby pyramids, that of the pharaoh Khufu. The sphinx lies guarding the pyramids at Giza. Its face is believed to bear the features of Khafre, son of Khufu, whose own pyramid is only slightly more modest than that of his father. The Greek classical ideal: 5 th - 4 th century BC - Greece in the classical period makes the innovations which underlie the mainstream western tradition in art. - The essential characteristic of classical Greek art is a heroic realism.
- Painters and sculptors attempt to reveal the human body, in movement or repose, exactly as it appears to the eye. The emphasis will be on people of unusual beauty, or moments of high and noble drama Charioteer of Delphi The nude in Greek sculpture: from the 5 th c. BC - The male body is an acknowledged object of beauty in ancient Greece.
- The male nude is perhaps the greatest achievement of Greek sculpture. Discus Tower Kritios PHIDEAS - Chief sculptor of all the figures of the Parthenon. - figures are generally Gods conceived as heroic men and women.

ROMAN SCULPTURE - deducted the human body and concentrated on the bust or just the head part of the human figure. Evident are the bust of JULIUS CEASAR AND MARK ANTHONY.
BYZANTINE SCULPTURE BYZANTINE SCULPTURE - this is the time of catholic liberation. The Roman persecution of Christians ended and celebration of the mass become legal. - common subjects prominent during this era are biblical characters, and the image of God the father as a bearded old man.
ROMANESQUE SCULPTURE It is an architecture developed in Italy and Western Europe and characterized by the use of round arches, thick and heavy walls and small windows. Columns, decorative use of arcades and profuse ornament.
