Voltaire
Essence of a purpose in life:

to work, to create, to excel, and to be
concerned about the world and its
affairs.

Evolution of Definition of WORK
My father taught me to work;
he did not teach me to love it.
Abraham Lincoln

Theres no fun like work.
Thomas J. Lipton, Founder of Lipton Tea

Phase
Attitude Timeframe
Traditional Work

(Information
Age)
Transcendent Work
actualizes
1950 - Present
Traditional Perspectives
Work alienates because it
sabotages mans ability to pursue
more worthwhile goals.
Transitional Perspectives
We will work! We will earn our daily bread by
the sweat of our brow. Work is what we
need. (Anton Chekhov)

A means to some desired end.
A reason to work
making a living
avoiding boredom
keeping in touch with other people
Transcendent Perspectives
The action of working provides
stimulation and impetus because
through it, the individual becomes all
that he is capable of becoming

Imagine work as a medium through which
people discover each other; work as having
spiritual content; and work as the process
which leads to transcendence
Transcendence
to rise above or go beyond the limits of;
to triumph over the negative or
restrictive aspects of; to surpass or
exceed.
Mans Constant Search for Happiness
Lasting happiness is not found in leisure
activities, but in purposeful work.

One of the greatest misconceptions of life is
the universal failure to realize that work
gives your joy.
Attitude
+
Work content = Purposeful work
Purposeful Work
Id rather be working.
Work is a meaningful activity
Work is your identity
Work is FUN!!!
Ask Yourself NOW
In what one way is my work meaningful
or even life-giving?
How do I deal with difficulties at work
and with my own limitations?
What is one way I can be:
Creative at work
Relate to someone at work
Change a dehumanizing system
Attitude
+
Work content = Purposeful work
ATTITUDE IS THE KEY!!!
Attitude

What Attitudes Do for Us
Provides a frame of reference
(PARADIGM)
Values are expressed through
attitudes
Can facilitate reconciling
contradictions
Aids in personal adjustment
Somewhere between our emotions
and our thought processing lies
our attitudes.
Attitude can have a significant effect
on the behavior of a person at
work.

PARADIGM
Attitudes and Paradigm
Paradigm the image you have in your
mind of the way things are out there
- the images we carry in our
heads of the way things are, of reality,
come from our own backgrounds and
experiences
- the map we have in our
minds
All of us think we see the world as it
is; we see the world as we are.

Changing Your Attitude
What you think
What you feel
What you do

It is easier to change the way you
think than your emotions.
Developing Positive Attitude at Work
Do the best you can and tell yourself
the best has got to be good enough.
Things arent as bad as you think they
are.
Think positive, As You Think So You
Are.

Obstacles
Exaggerating
Example: Im always late for meetings.
Replace with: I make it to meetings most
of the time.

Over generalizing
Example: Im stupid.
Replace with: This time I made a wrong
turn, but usually I do get to where Im
going early.
Obstacles
Personalizing
Example: Everyone noticed that I wore the same
dress twice.
Replace with: I like this outfit, and I am properly
dressed for the occasion.

Either-Or Thinking
Example: Either I get the promotion or Im a
failure.
Replace with: My performance has been
exceptional, and I have a good chance of getting
promoted. If I dont get it this time, there will be
other opportunities.
Obstacles
Jumping to Conclusions
Example: I wasnt assigned the project because I
wasnt at my desk when my manager called.
Replace with: Ill ask my manager if theres a way
I can help out with the assignment.

Ignoring the Positive
Example: I did not make my sales quota last
month.
Replace with: I hit my sales goals for 11 or 12
months and I will hit it again.

9. Be a positive energy source with

10.Avoid using negative energy as

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of
attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important
than facts. It is more important than the past, the
education, the money, than circumstances, than
failure, than successes, than what other people
think or say or do. It is more important than
appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or
break a company... a church... a home. The
remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday
regarding the attitude we will embrace for that
day. We cannot change our past... we cannot
change the fact that people will act in a certain
way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only
thing we can do is play on the one string we have,
and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is
10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react
to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of
our Attitudes.
Charles Swindoll
"The definition of success--To laugh much; to
win respect of intelligent persons and the
affections of children; to earn the approbation
of honest critics and endure the betrayal of
false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the
best in others; to give one's self; to leave the
world a little better, whether by a healthy
child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social
condition.; to have played and laughed with
enthusiasm, and sung with exultation; to
know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived--this is to have
succeeded." Ralph Waldo Emerson
