SURFACE HARDNESS
The

test is using rebound

hammer/schmidt hammer.
Is a non-destructive instrument,
cheap, easy to operate

Objective
To

obtain the elasticity & damping properties

of the surface layer of concrete.
To obtain the strength of concrete surface

Method

Release the plunger from its lock

Hold the plunger to extend from the body & hold the
plunger perpendicular to the concrete and slowly
push the body toward the object

Automatically release & the energy stored in the

spring propel hammer towards the plunger

Slide indicators travels with the hammer mass &

record the rebound distance

Procedure

Prepare number of cubes covering the strength to be

encountered

Cubes shall be cast & cured as laid down in IS: 516:

1959

Cubes be removed from wet storage about 24hours

before testing

Clean the face of cubes & test it with rebound

hammer

Take reading after been test

Formula
Rebound

When

Number Index:

X1 = indicate the path driven and

velocity reach by hammer after impact
When X0 = indicate the path driven and
velocity reach by hammer before impact

Average of rebound numbers and standard deviations were

calculated using Equations 1 and 2 respectively as:

Where fa is the average of rebound numbers, fi is the rebound number, n is

the total impact number and S is the standard deviation.

Compressive Test of
Concrete

Objectives
To determine

the compressive strength of

concrete.
To identify the test methods that will be
applied to each concrete in the projects.
To identify factors that affected the
compressive strength of steel

Standard

Test Method for Compressive

Strength of Cylindrical Concrete
Specimens are using ASTM C39/C39M

1.

Cubes for compression test are casted in a

steel or cast-iron moulds of prescribed
dimensions

2.

3.

Stored at a temperature of 18C to 22C

(< 7 days). relative humidity of 90% need
to be maintained.
The cube is demoulded just before testing
at 24 hours.
1. By adding water in a concrete mix and the
specimens are stored in a curing tank at 18C
to 22C until the required age (16-28 hours).

At the time of testing, the specimen is

placed in a Compression Testing Machine
with the position of cubes at right angles
to the position of cast. The load is applied
at a constant rate of stress within the

area of the cubes for the calculations.

Calculation
Compressive

strength is calculate
using the following formula
Compressive strength
(N/mm2) = Wf/Ap
Where
Wf= Maximum applied load, (N)
Ap= Plan area of specimen mould,
(mm2)
The

unit for compressive strength

is Mpa or N/mm2

Results

The effect of curing to the

compressive strength of
concrete

Grade of the concrete based on the minimum

compressive strength at 7 days and 28 days

Conclusion
The

higher the grade of a

concrete, the higher its
compressive strength at 7 days
and 28 days.
Curing affect the compressive
strength of concrete.
