Teaching Technical Skills

Teaching Technical
Skills
1) Introduce the Technical Skill
2) Demonstrate and Explain the Technical Skill

3) Have Athletes Practice the Skill

4) Correct Errors

1) Introduce the Technical Skill

A good introduction involves
Getting the teams attention
Arranging the team so everyone can see and hear
Naming the technique and explaining how it is used
in the game

2) Demonstrate and Explain the Technical Skill

The primary ways to help athletes acquire a mental plans for a
technique.
The coach should demonstrate so that athletes give their
respect. Since he/she can perform the technique very well.
An effective way consists of three steps:
1) Demonstrating and Explaining
Explain how the demonstration will be given
Make sure to have their attention

Demonstrate the whole technique as it would be

performed in a game
Slow down the speed

2) Demonstrate and Explain the Technical Skill

2) Relating the technique to previously learned techniques
3) Checking for understanding

3) Have Athletes Practice the Skill

The seven Principles for Technical Skill Practice

1. Have athletes practice the right technique

2. Have athletes practice the technique in game like conditions as
soon as they can
3. Keep practices short and frequent when teaching new techniques
4. Use practice time efficiently
5. Make optimal use of facilities and equipment
6. Make sure athletes experience a reasonable amount of success at
each practice
7. Make practice fun

4) Correct Errors
For practice to be productive, the coach must provide athletes
with two types of FEEDBACK to correct errors
I.How the completed performance compared with the desired
performance
II.How to change an incorrect performance to more closely
approximate the desires performance

Observe and evaluate performance

TACTICS

GAME PLAN
SEASON STRATEGY

A tactic is a plan to gain and advantage in a contest

A strategy is a plan of action for your team for a
season or series of contests.
A game plan is the application of the team strategy
to a particular contest, and emphasizing the use of
a particular set of tactics or the assignment of
players to guide or block certain opponents.

GAME SENSE
Reading the
situation

From a tactical perspective, think of a sport contest

as a series of problems to be solved by coach and the
players.
Making good tactical decisions to solve this problems
involves a complex set of tactical skills consisting of:
reading the play or situation,
acquiring the knowledge needed to make an appropriate
tactical decision, and
applying ones decision-making skills to the problem

Reading the situation

Listen to your opponents communication and anticipate
Cognitive skills
- the ability to read the situation
Perception
-- the ability to recognize and interpret sensory stimuli
Attention
-- the ability to focus on what is relevant to make
appropriate decisions
Concentration
-- the ability to sustain ones attention on what is relevant.

Tactical knowledge
Athletes make better tactical decision when they have
knowledge about these elements:
The rules
The strategic plan for the season and for that particular
game (game)

The physical playing conditions

The strengths and weaknesses
The options for the various situations within the game

Decision-making skills
Dr. Joan Vickers (2007) describes six others methods for
teaching
Method 1: teach the strategy in whole, then the part
Method 2: Have players observe decision-making in others

Method 3: Have players observe themselves

Method 4: Create variable practices
Method 5: Control feedback
Method 6: Ask questions
