Electrical Wiring

EE 2802 Applied
Electricity

Electrical Wiring Learning

Outcomes
At the end of this unit, you will be able to;
1. Describe the wiring regulations
2. Recognize standard wiring symbols
3. Describe the typical layout of residential and
industrial distribution systems
4. Select the appropriate cable size for a given
installations using voltage drop calculations
5. Identify and compare possible methods to
minimize the cable size and hence the cost

EE2802 - Applied Electricity

1. Wiring Regulations

Designed to protect persons and property

from
Electric shock
Fire
Burns
Injury from mechanical movement of
electrically actuated equipment
EE2802 - Applied Electricity

In Sri Lanka

IEE Wiring Regulations

Issued by;
Institution of Engineering and Technology IET

Other regulations:
Electricity Act of Sri Lanka
ICTAD SCA8 (Institute for Construction
Training and Development)
Power company requirements
Product manufacturers requirements
EE2802 - Applied Electricity

2. Wiring Symbols

Standard symbols for electrical

construction drawings is published by;
ANSI
- American National Standards
Institute

3. Selection Criteria of Cables

In accordance with the IEE Wiring Regulations

we should consider;
Current carrying capacity
Ambient temperature
Cable grouping
Thermal enclosure

Voltage drop
Disconnection time (if protected by
breakers no need to consider)
EE2802 - Applied Electricity

11

Step 1:
Calculate the current required by the
appliances
Ib = Appliance Power / Supply Voltage
Step 2:
Choose the protecting device (breaker)
In = Current rating of the protecting device
In > Ib
EE2802 - Applied Electricity

12

Step 3:
From IEE Wiring Regulation tables find the
correction factors for
Ambient temperature (Ca)
Cable grouping (Cg)
Thermal enclosure (Ci)

Step 4:
Calculate the current carrying capacity (Iz)
Consider the worst case
EE2802 - Applied Electricity

13

Step 5:
Select the suitable cable size for the
calculated Iz
Step 6:
Calculate the voltage drop
Between distribution board and the
appliance
Should be less than 4%
Use voltage drop in mV/A/m from tables

8 cables in a bunch
500C
Thermally insulated with glass fiber

Current required by the appliance (Ib)

= Appliance Power / Supply Voltage

Check whether In > Ib condition is satisfied

In = Current rating of the protective device

Find 3 correction factors (Ca, Cg & Ct)

Consider the worst case combination (Ca , Cg &

Ct)

Calculate the current carrying capacity

Iz = In / (combination of correction factors)

Select suitable cable size for Iz

Calculate voltage drop and check whether it is

below 4%

Consumer Unit

Distribute electrical power into branch circuits

Consists followings in a common enclosure:
1. Main switch
2. One or more RCDs (or RCCBs)
3. Protective circuit breaker for each
branch circuit

Apart from above, consists of;

Switching devices
- to start and stop power flow
Panel boards
Transformers

6. Earthing / Grounding
Types of earthing arrangements:
TN system
TT system
IT system
In Sri Lanka TT system

Supply authority earth and the installation

earth is independent

Commonly a galvanized iron pipe
