Introduction

South Asian population of UK has a relative high risk of heart disease


compared to locals there.

Many researchers consider obesity and dietary fat to be important


components of heart disease.

Food items consumed by south Asians are the main cause of obesity.

Traditional indian food includes ghee.

Full fat milk preferred for preparation of yoghurt and sweet meats.

This study mainly focuses on two issues

Do habit and lifestyle play an important role in development of disease?

As younger population of South Asian population are at greater or lesser risk of heart disease than
parents as their dietary habits differ from their parents.

Aim of the study is to investigate

Is diet reason for Heart disease?

Western food or indian food resulting in fat

How much role western fat foods have in making people Obese

Effects of high fat items in the diet

South Asians awareness of heart disease

Method of the Study

Data from 149 members of population of London area.

Information regarding Age, Gender, Place of Residencen,

Collection of data about food consumed in the past 24 hours.

80 males, 69 females.

Avg age of employees-39.3,students-21.2

Ethnicity

Indian

Pakistan

Religion

Bangladeshis
Hindu

Sikh

Muslim

No Religion

Results of the Study

Amount of Fat in the Diet is Calculated from past 24-hour diet habits of the
sample.

COMPEAT(powerful software program for analysing diets) is used to analyze


the amount of fat provided by each item.

The results are as follows

Series of Regression analysis investigated the relationship between the


occurrence of food items and percent fat in the respondents diets. Main items
contribute for fat are

Non-vegetarians-Curried meat

Vegetarians-Butter & Cheese

Potato Chips and Curried vegetables are the other sources of fat.

Outcomes

Overall fat content is 37% compared to 30% which is recommended.

Four-fifths of the sample were above recommended level of fat intake in


their diet .

For Non-vegetarians, traditionally prepared food is the main cause of fat.

Younger participants are equally likely as the older participants to intake


curried meat as a high fat item.

Only 13 % people felt that their diet is unhealthy.

Conclusion

South Asians in the UK are not aware of the heart disease posed to them.

Both Western food items as well south Asian food items responsible for fat.

Butter is the main source of fat, the study reveals it with numbers.

South Asians irrespective of their age are faced with a serious challenge to
develop good food habits to decrease risk of heart disease.
