EXPERIMENT #12:

ACID-BASE TITRATIONS:
ANALYSIS OF ANTACID TABLETS

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
What is an Antacid?
Antacids
- these are substances that consists of weak bases (hydroxide and
carbonate) which is used to treat stomach acidity by neutralizing
gastric hydrochloric acid or preventing too much secretion of acid.
- This can be used to treat heartburn, indigestion and acid
indigestion.
- Antacids are made up of different kind of chemicals. Some of the
common ones include Al(OH)3, Al(OH)3, or both.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
Antacids are medicines that help correct the pH balance
in your stomach. Your stomach has its own natural acids and
sometimes these acids become too much for your stomach
to handle. This is caused when you dont eat on time and
you have an empty stomach. What the antacid does is to
neutralize this affect. They buffer the stomachs gastric acid
since they are basic in nature.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
Neutralization
When a strong acid and a strong base solution are mixed, a
neutralization reaction occurs, and the products do not have
characteristics of either acids or bases. Instead, a neutral salt and
water are formed. Look at the reaction below:
HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) H2O(l) + NaCl(aq)
The efficiency of antacid can be determined by finding the number
of grams of HCl that can be neutralized by 1 gram tablet. The higher
the amount of HCl, the more efficient the antacid is. This equation
can be used:
NHCl X VHCl = NNaOH X VNaOH (dilution)

MATERIALS & METHODOLOGY

REAGENTS
1. 0.1 M HCl solution
2. 0.1 M NaOH solution
3. Antacid tablets
4. Phenolphthalein indicator

MATERIALS
1. 250 mL Erlenmeyer Flask
2. Base & Acid burette
3. Medicine dropper
4. Mortar & pestle
5. Analytical balance
6. 100 mL graduated cylinder

MATERIALS & METHODOLOGY

1. Crush two antacid tablets.
2. Get the actual weight of the crushed tablets
and transfer into the flask.
3. Add 50.0 mL of 0.1 M HCl to the antacid and
dissolve.
4. Add 2(3) drops of phenolphthalein indicator
into the mixture.
5. Titrate the antacid mixture with 0.1 M NaOH
until the solution turns to faint pink color.
6. Do at least 2 trials.
7. Calculate the weight of HCl that reacted with
the antacid.
