What is kinesics?
Kinesics literally means body movement. It stands for the way the
body or its parts communicates without words, using facial
expressions, gestures, etc.
One can loose with words, but body language speaks truth.

Kinesics was first used in 1952 by Ray Birdwhistell, an

anthropologist.

Birdwhistell argued that all movements of the body have meaning,

and that non-verbal behavior has a grammar.

Role of different parts of body

Head
Head up- sign of honour, self respect, self confidence.
Head below- sign of politeness and guilt.
Face
It is the mirror of mind, expresses emotions.
Eye contact
1) Fixed eye shows concentration.
2)Raised eyes indicate fear.
3)Smiling eyes reflect happiness.
Gestures
1)Pounding fist on table shows anger.
2)Shuffling from one leg to another means nervousness.

Proxemics
The term proxemics refers to the study of the way the people use
physical space to convey messages
Proxemics is what brings us together, today. The term proxemics
was coines by researcher Edward Hall during the 1950s and 1960s
and has to do with the study of our use of space and how various
differences in that use can make us feel more relaxed.

Proxemics is one of several subcategories of the study of nonverbal

communication.

Advantages of kinesics

body language communication is easily visible, helps the receiver

to easily decode the message.

Adds intensity to the process of communication.

Kinesics is particularly important to healing fields and health

practitioners.

Can be transmitted more economically than other means.

When we understand others fellings, can make situation more

understanding.

Limitations of kinesics

Chances of misinterpretation, because people belonging to

different culture backgrounds send different body signals.

If the listener is inattentive, these body languages become

ineffective.

Facial expressions are to be judged with caution because same

expressions may convey different meanings.

We cannot totally rely upon non verbal communication, it may not

always be true.

Advantages of Proxemics

Studying Proxemics helps one to understand many non-verbal cues that

communicate intimacy , formality, and other factors for social interaction.

Proxemics defines regions around people and the acceptable social

behaviors in those zone.

Proxemics defines three different types of space :

(a)Fixed-feature space

(b)Semi fixed-feature space

(c) Informal space

Proxemics also defines eight factors in nonverbal communication, or

proxemic behavior categories, that apply to people engaged in
conversation

There is no use of body part in proxemics.

Comparison

In the Kinesics we studied about Motion gestures and in Proxemics we studied about
using personal space.

In the Kinesics we study of convey that occurs through body movement , positions ,
and facial expressions but in proxemics we study the occurs through special
behavior.

In proxemics there is a study of the use of space, touch, and distance as features of
nonverbal communication. and in Kinesics we study of non verbal gestures, facial
expression, eye contact and body posture.
