Weigh System FactorsThe efficiency and accuracy of
the OBW system can be affected by the following:
Load Position Loading the dump body too far back (4)
or too far forward (6) can generate inaccurate payload
readings. Always distribute the load evenly (5).
Operating On a Slope The OBW system weight
calculations are most accurate when the machine is on
a level grade (8). As the slope angle increases from
a level grade, either as a downhill slope (7) or as an
uphill slope (9), weight distribution is affected, thus
resulting in a less accurate payload weight. When the
machine slope value is greater than 5%, the OBW will
not calculate or display payload weight.
Calibrated Versus Actual Payload Actual payloads
should be approximately equal to the calibrated payload
for greatest accuracy. For example, if the truck is
hauling a smaller payload than the calibrated payload,
system accuracy will be reduced, and calibration of the
OBW system will be necessary to maintain accuracy. To
calibrate the OBW system, see your authorized dealer.

Material and Material Density Change

It is recommended that
the OBW system be calibrated under normal
working conditions and with normal payload
material. For example, if the OBW system is
calibrated using dry material, and this is the
normal working condition, a payload of wet
material may cause the dump body over-loaded
light (red) to come on prematurely. Alternatively,
if the OBW system is calibrated using wet
material and is loaded with dry material, the fullyloaded light (green) may never come on. If
material density changes, calibration of the OBW
system will be necessary to maintain accuracy.
To calibrate the OBW system, see your
authorized dealer.

John Deere Dump Body

Driveline AssistPushing the dump body control
switch once (left LED on) will activate the driveline assist
function. Driveline assist is used to improve load dumping
cycle times.
With driveline assist active, machine at a stop, and the
dump body up switch pushed or dump body control lever
pulled back, the following will occur:
1. Service brakes fully apply.
2. Transmission shifts into neutral.
3. Engine speed increases to fast idle.
NOTE: Dump body raise function will latch so
it is not necessary to push and hold the
dump body up switch or pull back on the
dump body control lever.
4. Dump body rises.
5. After dump body is fully raised and unloaded, lower
the dump body.
- Push and release the dump body down switch to
float the dump body down.
- Push the dump body control lever (if equipped)
forward to detent and lower the dump body.
NOTE: Forward gear can be selected while the dump
body is lowering or when it is completely lowered.
6. Push forward gear select switch to shift transmission
into forward gear and release the service brakes.

Hard StopPushing the dump body control switch twice

will activate the hard stop function (right LED on).
When active, this function allows the dump body to stop
abruptly when being raised. The hard stop helps remove
any material that may be stuck in the dump body.
NOTE: If the machine is moving and the dump body lock
bar is in the locked position, the dump body tip
buttons on the 25-button SSM will be disabled.
Load AssistLoad assist is used to decrease the
number of functions an operator must perform to latch
service brakes during dump body loading. Load assist is
enabled through the CAN monitor unit (CMU). To enable
load assist, see your authorized dealer.
Load assist functions as follows:
TX1098247 UN23SEP11
Dump Body Control Switch
1. Bring machine to a complete stop at the desired
loading location.
2. With service brake pedal pushed, select neutral gear.
3. The electronic brake valve (EBV) will latch service
brakes and hold machine during dump body loading.
4. Load assist will release when the following occurs:
a. Service brake pedal is pushed.
b. Transmission is shifted to forward or reverse gear.

John Deere Dump/Spread

Dump Body Height Speed LimitWith the dump body
raised past the 2% position, maximum machine speed is
limited to 10 km/h (6 mph). The machine will control engine
speed and transmission operating gear to limit maximum
machine speed. When the dump body has been lowered
past the 2% position, normal operation will continue.
CAUTION: Prevent possible injury and machine
damage. Raising the dump body while traveling
at a high rate of speed can cause machine
tip-over. Do not raise dump body when traveling
faster than 10 km/h (6 mph).
Using Operator Speed Control for Load
SpreadingWhen used in conjunction with the dump
body control lever (if equipped) or dump body switches
(located on 25-button SSM), the operator speed control
function can assist with load spreading. For more
information on operator speed control, see Using Operator
Speed Control. (Section 2-2.)
Load spreading assist operates as follows:
NOTE: For load spreading assist to function properly,
the dump body height speed limit must be
disabled. To disable dump body height limit,
see your authorized dealer.

If an attempt is made to raise the dump body when the

machine side-to-side incline is above the preset limit, the
system will prevent the dump body from being raised. A
Prevent Tip pop-up warning will flash on the CAN monitor
unit (CMU) for 3 seconds, after which, the CMU display
will switch to the Incline Screen.
NOTE: To enable or disable the Downhill Tip function,
see your authorized dealer.
If Downhill Tip function is enabled when the machine is
unloading on a downhill slope, the system will not allow
the dump body to rise fully. Instead, the system will
subtract the ground slope from the maximum dump body
position, then only allow the dump body to rise a maximum
position of 70 degrees when measured from level ground.
Example: With a downhill slope of 10 degrees, the system
will only allow the bin to rise 60 degrees. 10 degrees plus
60 degrees equals 70 degrees.

Productivity Study Overview

Purpose of the study:

Customer runs Cat articulated trucks but recently tried out the Deere
460E. The customer was told by Deere that the 460E would move more
material and burn less fuel than the 740B. Caterpillar was invited to
demonstrate the capability of both trucks.

A 740B and the 460E were fitted with auxiliary fuel tanks and scale pads set
in the ground to measure truck weights in order to measure productivity and
fuel efficiency.

Two studies were conducted by the Caterpillar Team.

In the first study, the trucks were operated as part of their normal
production. This resulted in each truck getting 5 passes from HEX,
regardless of whether it was a 740B or the 460E.
The second study was conducted to determine maximum production
capability. HEX operator was instructed to load each truck to maximum
material. This generally resulted in each truck getting 6 passes.

Truck Comparisons from Operator Feedback

Ride
Both operators preferred 740B. Stated 460E side-to-side ride was
harsh when hitting a hole with one front wheel but not the other.
Shift Smoothness
460E had very smooth shifting. Seemed equivalent to 740B.
Cab
Did not like the windshield wiper. It only covered/cleaned 2/3 of
front windshield.
Did not like Deere armrest. Armrests not used in either truck.
Did not like Deere rear-view camera too dark. Seems to be
same display as T3 Cat trucks.
Deere had poor air conditioning.
Equipment manager pointed out that Deere cabs are consistent in
feel / controls across product types.

120

Truck Comparisons from Operator Feedback

Traction Control System
One operator (primarily in 460E) said Cat was better because Deere
tended to go straight when trying to steer with TCS active.
Other operator did not notice much difference between 740B and 460E.
Deere TCS was set to Auto.
Payload System (Onboard Weighing System Deeres terminology)
460E had light bar (standard), did not have payload measurement display
in the cab.
Bar showed Red most / all loads, indicates 110% overloaded. The truck did
not measure, at any time during the study 110% overload.
Customer had no interest in payload system. They had to call the rep to
confirm that the truck did not have the system activated on the truck.
Dumping bed
Both operators complained that they had to stop and shift to Neutral on
Deere truck to begin hoisting the bed.
Cat operator would slow to a near stop and start hoisting at half throttle as
the truck drove ahead.
Equipment manager preferred the tailgate on Deere to Cat; felt it held
material in better
Global Construction & Infrastructure

GENERATIONS AHEAD

121

Our Key Observations

Carryback is an issue for 460E

Consistently had significant carryback due to narrow base of bed.
Operator has to daily clean it out with HEX and sometimes more often,
depending on material
460E body has a specified height that was 12 inches taller than the 740B
Most likely threw off rhythm of the loader operator
Longer cycle times (approx. 10 seconds)
May have contributed to lighter loads
Tires
Deere 460E was fitted with 875/65R29 (flotation tires), which added 4000lbs
and higher rotating inertia.
Probably hurt them on this site. Rain made trucks slide, not sink at this site.
Both Cat & Deere tire pressures were high. For Deere truck should be 45 /
55 / 55, noticed that Handbook and OMM did not agree on tire pressures
HEX operators could operate more efficiently
Bench heights were too short (but then customer explained that theyre
cutting to a certain height)
In some cases, this resulted in poor bucket fill factor
HEX operators loaded from the blind side

122

Summary

We demonstrated 740B to be a better performing truck than 460E

As good or better productivity (tons / hour)
As good or better fuel rate (gallons / hour)
More fuel efficient (tons / gallon)
If Deere fixes carryback and uses standard tires, fuel efficiency would be much
closer to Cat
Both operators preferred 740B over 460E
Customers Feedback after presenting results
Surprised 460E did not carry more material
Now considers the 460E to be comparable to the 740B
Seemed to conclude that 460E is a good truck but not as good as advertised
and that Deere has a problem with the body design and needs to address it.
He was going to call his Deere salesman to address.
Commented that Deere had produced a good truck (for their first time) and that
they would only get better.
Feels like 460E resale will be weak for a while based on reputation of Bell /
Deere trucks.
Operator feedback is part of their buying decision but its not significant unless
there is a glaring problem.

Operators Comments
Although the Volvo seems to have an edge in climbing
performance, the Cat machine beats it in almost every other
aspect. The cab in the Cat is much more user friendly and
quiet. The 3 stage retarding system is far superior to the Volvo
single stage system. I believe in a practical application, much
of the advantage that the Volvo gains going up the hill can be
recovered when hauling down grades. If I had to operate one

or the other daily, I would pick the Cat every time.
