Propaganda
through Media

Even Now
Media have big role in constructing people
perception in conflict.

The International Journal of Intercultural Relations has published the results of

research by Jonas R. Kunst, David L. Sam and Pl Ulleberg into Muslims' perceptions
of Islamophobia (2012).
A cross-cultural study was conducted in three different European countries (France,
Germany and the UK) among four different Muslim minority groups (277 FrenchMaghrebis, 446 German-Turks, 167 German-Arabs and 454 British-Pakistanis).

Media Roles in
Conflict
Creating or Escalating Conflict
Case 1:
Prophet Muhammad Cartoons in Denmark
Newspaper (Jyllands-Posten)
This case led to Islamic protests across the Muslim
world, some of which escalated into violence with
instances of firing on crowds of protestors
(resulting in a total of more than 100 reported
deaths).

Various groups, primarily in

the Western world,
responded by endorsing the
Danish policies, including
"Buy Danish" campaigns and
other displays of support.
Danish Prime Minister
Anders Fogh Rasmussen
described the controversy as
Denmark's worst
internasional crisis
since World War II.

Mass Media and New Media involvements.
Mass media still one of main reference for people
(especially old people in Indonesia).
New media provide us with faster and more news
but the validity and reliability are in questions.
We should be more cautious and try to find more
trustable references.

Mainstreaming Partys Interest

Objectivity of media are often in question. Here are some
possibility why media taking side :
1. Media owner
2. Majority of people.
3. Profit reason.

Media Power

1. Propaganda

3. Framing

2. Public Opinion

4. Agenda-setting

Recommendations
Reality in media is just medias reality and not
necessarily reality in actual meaning. People
should not always believe what media say.
Media are not only potential cause of conflict
but can also be used for reducing conflict.
People should be more aware about media
effect on people perception. Therefore,
people should find much information to cover

Questions? Critics? Suggestions?

1. Beni (24338) findings can be more

developed to general theory. Theory that
focus on one case with different discourses.
2 Sekar (25254) Interesting! The media has
two face. We can not find the solution. The
case is too overwhelming. Give the solution to
how should we act.
