AIR PORT AIR SIDE

Group 4

AIRPORT AIR SIDE

Proper planning of design is important
Function
ensure safety of employees, pilots, passengers and air
craft
meet current needs
provide areas for future growth

AIR SIDE FACILITIES

Consist of 4 areas:
runway

areas
taxiway areas
aircraft parking areas
airspace

Runway areas
Runways- turf or paved rectangular surfaces

designed for aircraft to conduct takeoffs and landings

differ depends on the type of airport and aircraft

Placement based on

wind direction and velocity

availability of airspace
local environment
human made obstruction
local topography (wetlands, landfills, adjacent farmland)

-Extending runway at Muskegon

County Airport

Runway areas
Consist of 3 types:
Runway safety areas (RSAs)

used to protect an aircraft from damage in the event leaves the

runway
Condition: drain sufficiently
dry weather (can support snow removal equipment, air-craft
rescue equipment, and the occasional aircraft

Object free areas (OFAs)

wider than RSAs
centered on runway/taxiway centerlines
free of obstacles (except for navigation or ground
maneuvering)

Runway areas
Runway protection zones
Function: protect safety of on guard

inhabitants that are property located

directly in the line of approach and
departure

Taxiway Areas
paved or turf surfaces constructed between airport

areas
allow aircraft to traverse freely on ground (designed
based on maneuvering speed)
Consist of 4 ways :

Parallel taxiways
preserve fluid flow of air craft
allow take off and landing operations to continue while
queue up

Holding bays
Accommodate the air craft to take off

Used in bypass
Bypass taxiways

Allow the queued air craft to continue to runway

Turnarounds
function as holding bay and bypass taxiway
when parallel taxiway not available

AIR CRAFT PARKING AREAS

(APRONS)
Turf/paved areas that accommodate air craft

for loading, unloading, parking and

maintenance
Design based on
Turning

radii
Wingspan

Consist of 2 types:
Transient Aprons
Not

permanently based at airport

(eg: visitor air craft)

Based

Aircraft Aprons
Smaller than transient

Perth Airport Apron

Airport apron

Hangar
Storage space for air craft
Depend on local demand and design consideration

Tie down
Outdoor storage for air craft

Airport hangar

AIR SPACE
Multiple imaginary surfaces
Areas surrounding air port
Design:

Clear of human made obstacles

Natural obstacle

Reason:
Ensure safety of flying craft

SUPPORTING FACILITIES
AIR NAVIGATION

Assistance to pilots for safe and efficient

maneuvering
Guides pilot into correct runway alignment for
landing

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL

Control all airspace operations and on-ground

movement of vehicles
