Growth of Prussia
Roots of Power:
Prussia emerged from the 30 Years War as
an independent, German state not controlled
by the Holy Roman Emperor .
Prussia developed a very strong army:
-Taxes collected from Junker(s) (Prussian
nobles) paid for a strong military.

-Junkers served as military officers while Peasants


served as soldiers- but all were well-trained!

Prussia developed an Absolute monarchy


with the Hohenzollern dynasty firmly in control.

Frederick the Great


(Frederick II)
Military Genius:
Upon becoming king, Frederick the Great
doubled the size of the Prussian Army.
Frederick won a stunning series of victories
against much larger countries and armies.
For example
-In the 7 Years War against rival Austria he
gained Silesia part of Austria).
-He grabbed part of Poland in a later deal with
Russia and Austria.
Frederick is considered to be a military tactical
genius, and many of his tactics were later
emulated by military leaders many decades
later

Frederick the Great

Religious Policies: Frederick welcomed the Huguenots to Prussia
after their ejection from France. This increased Prussias
population which was important to field larger armies.
Leadership Style:
Frederick was well-liked by his people. He often fraternized
with the poor people in Berlin(the capital city).
Frederick appeared very modest, choosing to wear his army
Uniform rather than royal robes.
Frederick was an enlightened monarch: a king who read
various political theories in order to be a better ruler. For
example, he read book by the political philosopher,
Machiavelli.

Dynasty: Mehmed
Wars of Expansion:
The Ottomans were originally from Anatolia
(Turkey), but they conquered much of North
Africa, the Middle East and Southeastern Europe.
They captured Constantinople in 1453, putting an
end to the long reign of the Holy Roman Empire.
They engaged in many wars with the Austrian
Hapsburgs, but the Ottomans were stopped at
Vienna by Charles V.

Ottoman Empire:
Suleiman the Magnificent
Suleiman was a conqueror who expanded
the size of his empire.
He sponsored the building of public works
such as bridges, hospitals and mosques
throughout his country.
Religious Tolerance
Though the Ottoman Empire was officially a
Muslim state, those of other religions such as
Christianity and Judaism were tolerated within
it as they were considered People of the
Book.
