PROFILE
Born as Abdul Malik bin Abdul Karim
Amrullah
born on 17 February 1908 (Hijriyah
Calendar: 13 Muharram 1362) in
Minangkabau, West Sumatra,
first child of seven brothers. He was raised
in a family of devout Muslims. His father
was Abdul Karim Amrullah, a famous
Muslim reformist in Minangkabau who was
known as Haji Rasul, while his mother, Sitti
Shafiyah, came from artists of
Minangkabau descent.

philosopher and political activist

EDUCATION

Learned the Quran and anything related to Islamic studies


from his father.
At the age the age of seven, he entered into a village school
(Sekolah Rakyat) and studied general science.
While studying in Thawalib, the Islamic high school established
by his father in Padang panjang, he is not considered as a
smart child, he even often did not attend a few days because
he felt bored and chose to seek knowledge in his own way. He
preferred to be in a library owned by his public teacher,
Zainuddin Labay El Yunusy.

EDUCATION

At the age of 16, he went to Java to study after learning that


Islam in Java is more advanced than in Minangkabau.
In Yongjakarta, he got the opportunity to follow the
discussions and trainings organized by Islamic movements,
Muhammadiyah and Sarekat Islam.
While in Java, he was also active in various social and religious
activities.

EDUCATION

Later on, he went to Mecca to extend his knowledge in Islam,


including learning the Arabic language and perform his first hajj
pilgrimage.
His endeavor to master both Islamic and secular knowledge, pushed
him to deepen philosophy, literature, history, sociology and politics
by autodidact. He read many outstanding Arabian intellectuals
works such as the works of Zaki Mubarak, George Zaidan, Abbas
alAqqad, Mustafa alManfaluti and Hussain Haikal, that inspired him
to be more progressive in thought.
Furthermore, by mastering Arabic language very well, he was
capable of reading and criticizing the works of western thinkers that
had been translated into Arabic, such as the works of Albert Camus,
William James, Sigmund Freud, Arnold J. Toynbee, Jean Paul Sartre,
Karl Marx and Pierre Loti.

CONTRIBUTIONS
Majority of his published is about curent problems which
related to the religion
Awarded a honorary degree in literature by the National
University of Malaysia in 1958
Awarded a honorary degree of Doctor by Al-Azhar University
in 1960
At Makkah, he established Hindia Timur Union to make ease
for Indonesian jamie when they have any problems.
He established collegue Kuliah al-Mubalighin for trains and
provides a new members of Islamic organization.
