10. Servant Leadership


An approach focusing on leadership from the point

of view of the leader and his or her behaviors.


Leaders be caring to the concerns of their

followers, sympathize with them.


Put followers first, empower them, and help them

develop their full personal capacities.

10.1 Servant Leadership Definition

Begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve
first.

Then conscious choice brings one to want to lead

First to make sure that other peoples highest priority needs are
being served.

The best test . . . is:

Do those served grow as persons;

Do they, while being served, become better, wiser, freer, more


independent, more likely themselves to become servants? And,

What is the effect on the least advantaged in society;

will they benefit, or, at least, will they not be further deprived?

2. Ten Characteristics of a Servant Leader

Listening.

(2)

Empathy (Understanding Follower).

(3)

Healing. (Support followers by helping them overcome personal problems)

(4)

Awareness.

(5)

Persuasion. (Influencing)

(6)

Conceptualization. (Providing a clear sense of its goals and direction)

(7)

Foresight. (ability to know the future)

(8)

Stewardship. (accept the responsibility)

(9)

Commitment to the growth of people.

11. Authentic Leadership


It focuses on whether leadership is genuine and
real.
Authentic leadership is about the authenticity of
leaders and their leadership.
i.

Intra-personal perspective,

Which focuses closely on the leader and what goes on within


the leader.
It incorporates the leaders self-knowledge, self-regulation,
and self-concept.

ii. Inter-personal process.

Authentic leadership as relational, created by leaders and


followers together.
It results not from the leaders efforts alone, but also from the
response of followers.

Authenticity emerges from the interactions


between leaders and followers.
It is a reciprocal process because leaders affect
followers and followers affect leaders.
iii. Developmental Perspective:

Authentic Leadership as something that can be raise in a


leader, rather than as a fixed trait.
