An adverb clause
An adverb clause functions as an adverb,
modifying a verb, adjective, or adverb. It tells how,
when, where, to what degree, why, or under what
condition. It is introduced and connected to the
independent clause by one of the following subordinate
conjunctions.
1. An adverb clause telling Place: [where?]
- Conjunctions: where, wherever.
Examples:
- We went where the land was fertile.
- Wherever I live, I wont forget you.
- He can go wherever he wants.
- Now I live where my grandparents lived.

An adverb clause telling Time: [when?]
- Conjunctions: when(ever), while, after, before, since, as,
as soon as.
Examples:
- I had learned reading before I got 7.
- While I was cleaning the room I found a ring.
- I used to have a lot of English books when I was a student.
- As soon as I saw him I remembered his name.
- I watched her as she opened the letter.
- He has been living here since he was born.
- She went to bed after she had seen off her guests.

An adverb clause telling Purpose: [why?]
- Conjunctions: (so) that, in order that.
Examples:
- last month our shop was on a sale in order that we might sell
most of the goods.
- I stood on my tiptoes so that I could see him better.
- For the opening ceremony I have chosen Inter bookstore in
order that we can attract a lot of customers to buy my book.
- I switched off my phone so that I was able to study.

- Conjunctions: as, as if, as though.
Examples:
- He looked at me as if he didnt know me at all.
- Sometimes I feel as if I were extremely rich.
- Bat acted as though he had never met Oogii.
- When she came in from the rainstorm, she looked as if she
had taken shower with her clothes on.
- He walked as if hes dazed.
- I felt strange as I was drunk.

even if, in spite of the fact that, however.
Examples:

difference.

- Despite the fact that he is extremely rich, he is engaged in a
very simple lifestyle.
- I want to get married to her even if she is blind.
- In spite of the fact that he is ill, he is working on his new
invention.
- Fred is a good student, however his family lives in a very bad
condition.

Adverbial clause of condition


1. Example of real Condition:
Subject + will/shall + Verb I, Conj Subject + Verb Present simple
- I will pay you, provided I get my wages tomorrow.
- I shant tell him anything, unless he asks.
- If he is working, he cant go with us.
2. Example of Present unreal condition:
Subject + would/could + Verb I, Conj Subject + Verb Past simple
- If I found $100000 in the street, I would start my own business.
- If I were you, I wouldnt buy such a white elephant.
3. Example of Past unreal condition:
Sub + would/could + have + verb III, Conj Sub + Verb past participle
- We would have asked him about it, if he had come yesterday.
(But he didnt come here yesterday)

An adverb clause telling Result: [that what resulted?]
- Conjunctions: that, so, thats why.
Examples:
- She is ill, so she is absent now.
- The wind was so strong that I couldnt go fast.
- She is really skillful thats why we respect her very much.
- It was such a hot day that we spent the whole day in the
garden.
- He is such a rich person that he doesnt know what to do with
his money.
- I have a strong extra sense, thats why I am here to
participate in the contest.

An adverb clause telling Comparison: [to what degree?]
- Conjunctions: as, than.
Examples:
- She is taller than I am.
- He is hardworking as his father is.

An adverb clause telling Cause: [why?]
- Conjunctions: because, since, because of, once, for the
reason that, considering that, inasmuch as, now that.
Examples:
- Bold didnt come to my party, because I didnt invite him.
- Once you promised you should keep it.
- Since you started your report you must finish it.
- Now that you are the father, you must be more responsible.
- I am joining your team for the reason that you have a very
good team leader.
- I decide to marry him considering that he is reliable.
- I couldnt attend the joint seminar inasmuch as I was in
hospital.
