Design

Comprehensive Definition
Design is a roadmap or a strategic approach
for someone to achieve a unique expectation.
It defines the specifications, plans,
parameters, costs, activities, processes and
how and what to do within legal, political,
social, environmental, safety and economic
constraints in achieving that objective

constraints in achieving that objective

Simpler Definition
The synthesis of technology and human needs
into manufacturable products

For customers, in general, it is the quality of

core purpose or combination of structures of
the product/service, which in a glimpse make
them distinguish between poor or good
designs.

HOW DO YOU JUDGE A GOOD

DESIGNED CAR?

Focus of Designers
How to design products that:

Function well mechanically

Durable
Easy to use
Can be made from easily available material
Look appealing

Contributions of Design to the New

Products Process

To achieve good design, you need to develop a

solid product architecture.
What is Product Architecture?

Product Architecture Illustration

A product contains components

The components are combined into chunks
The chunks (subsystems) perform various functions

Product Architecture
Description of the way(s) in which functional elements
of a product or system are assigned to its constituent
sections or subsystems (chunks), and of the way(s) in
which they interact (or interrelated).

Prototype Development
Comprehensive Prototype: complete, fullyfunctioning, full-size product ready to be
examined by customers.
Focused Prototype: not fully functioning or
developed, but designed to examine a limited
number of performance attributes or features.
Examples: a crude, working prototype of an
electric bicycle; a foam or wood bicycle to
determine customers reactions to the proposed
shape and form.
