DOING BUSINESS RANKING

Doing Business in PNG

PNG currently enjoys higher exports, improved investment in long lead-time resource projects, and
increased government spending and reform and has a historic opportunity to harness itself to
regional growth.
With opportunity comes challenges:
Poor infrastructure - A lack of quality infrastructure and services can make it difficult to conduct
business and implement projects.
Land ownership - 97% of land in PNG is customary land, owned by the Indigenous people of PNG.
Negotiations with landowners can be complex, with no written laws governing the use of land.
Political stability - Whilst there was some political uncertainty leading up to the 2012 elections, a
stable government is now in place.
Law and order Many companies doing business in PNG find that security is one of their biggest
overheads, due to the countrys law and order issues.
Finding good management staff - Locally, education systems remain challenged, which can make it
difficult to find a deep pool of suitably educated and skilled staff.
