COSTING

When come to costing, Korean is

one of the lowest cost of material
and labour for shipbuilding
production compare to others.

The cheapest one goes to china

in terms of cost categories and
Korea still beat japan
shipbuilding industries.

From the table, the comparison is

clearer.

MARKET

During the 1970s and 1980s, South Korea became a leading

producer of ships, including oil super tankers, and oil-drilling
platforms.

There was a sharp decrease in new orders in the late 1980s;

caused by labour unrest and no financial assistance.

South Korea eventually became the world's dominant shipbuilder

with a 50.6% share of the global shipbuilding market as of 2008.

Present day

Today, South Korea is the world's second largest shipbuilding country

with a global market share of 29% in 2012.

South Korea leads in the production of large vessels such as cruise

liners, super tankers, LNG carriers, drill ships, and large container
ships.

WORLD SHIPBUILDING MARKET SHARE

BY COUNTRIES (2012)

WORLD NEW ORDERS

LOCATION
Korea is surrounded by 3 seas, it has a favorable natural coastline with large
estuaries and major river systems which lead themselves to the development of
offshore marine and shipbuilding.

TECHNOLOGY

Design Technology

3D modelling

Composite 3D Modelling (Structure, Piping, Electrical).

Interactive Environment (Operational Aspect, Auto Pipe Routing).

Data extraction & calculation (Weight, Paint area, Pressure drop

calculation, air flow - calculation)

Document Management

Drawing Tracking System.

Integration of data in one-platform (Access Control, Integrated 2D

drawings & 3D database).

Use of Cloud Computing (Integrate all department &

communication device, Large storage space).

Building Technology

Cutting, Marking, Low Cost Cutting Tools.

Welding (CO2 Welding, Robotic Welding)

Example from Geoje Shipyard:

An automatic welding robot system that enables welding works to be

performed through free motion on the wall of a cargo tank.

Accuracy Control Using 3-D Scanning

Measuring exact curvature for Bent plates - difficult and time

consuming.

3D scanning - compare fabricated curvature with design curvature.

Pipe Fabrication

Pipe Bending Machine

Stub Penetration Cutting Machine

Pipe Welding Roller

Pipe Cutting Machine

Process Technology

Others Technology

Robotic Arm:

Daewoo S&M Eng. (DSME), the second largest shipbuilder, built an

exosuit that being used by their employees and can lift up to 30 kg.
That's enough to lift a variety of smaller steel components, and precisely
position them for the most difficult welding tasks.

Towing Tank:

A variety of model test is being carried out in the towing tank, which
includes: resistance, self propulsion, propeller open water,
manoeuvring, and seakeeping test, flow visualization, and local flow
measurement etc.

Cavitation Tunnel

Enables cost effective and accurate prediction of cavitation

performance such as inception speed, cavitation extent, propeller
induced hull pressure fluctuation and rudder cavitation with full
model ship which simulating the most reliable wake field. Valuable
tools for flow field measurement and visualization allow
sophisticated research regarding flow field around vehicles with
complicated arrangement.

PRODUCTIVITY

Labour Productivity

In shipbuilding, labour productivity is important.

Reduction in the number of workers can increase the productivity of

the company in term of profit.

From the chart above, we can see that, japan has the highest
value of labour.

Comparison between japan and Korea that we can see is, Korea
has got the highest gross value of profit but higher number of
labour force has decreased its productivity figures.

Productivity of The Shipyard

Daewoo shipyard of South Korea, the maker of some of the worlds

largest vessels, is now planning to use innovative robotic
exoskeletons to makes its workflow productive.

The Iron Man type exoskeletons, based on the Human- Robot

interaction (HRI) technology, will allow shipyard workers to lift heavy
metal parts, pipes and other objects with extreme ease.

The productivity that can be increase is:

Speed of workers can be increase

Ability to lift heavier load

Productivity of Investment

Hyundai Heavy's share price has doubled to $116 in the past year,
and analyst Cho Young Jun, who follows the industry for Shin Young
Securities in Seoul, says there's still room for the stock to gain another
50% by the end of this year at the world's No. 1 shipbuilding
company.

"Korean shipyards have their profits locked in until 2009," says Cho.

He predicts that Hyundai Heavy's net earnings will triple to $642

million this year from $197 million last year. And he expects the
company's profits to top $2 billion in 2008.

Hyundai's earnings jumped nearly fivefold in 2005, but the

company's profit margin was only 1.7% on sales of $11.07 billion.

Productivity of Planning

Change of regulations : The substitution of single hull tankers for

double hull tankers.

Need of ship buyers : 14,000 TEU containers (Operational Efficiency) ,

Icebreaking tankers (Icebreaker + Oil tankers).

Needs of other industries : LNG FPSO (No need for fixed platform,
subsea pipe lines, and onshore plant), Offshore Wind Turbine
Installation Vessel.
