Coordinate System
All the drawings are superimposed on an invisible grid, or
coordinate system, with a Horizontal X-axis and a Vertical
Y-axis.
There are three type of Coordinate System :1.
2.
3.

Absolute Coordinate System

Relative Rectangular Coordinate System
Relative Polar Coordinate System

ABSOLUTE COORDINATE SYSTEMS

To enter an absolute coordinate, specify a point by entering its X and Y
values in the format x, y.

X,Y
0,30

-X

0,0

Syntax :

-Y

50,30

50,0

RELATIVE RECTANGULAR COORDINATE SYSTEMS

Use relative coordinates when you know the position of a point with respect to the
previous point.

Syntax : @ x distance, y distance

Y
@0,30

@-50,0

RELATIVE POLAR COORDINATE SYSTEMS

Polar co-ordinate system uses a distance and angle with reference to the previous
point to locate a point. Angles are measured in anti-clockwise direction, taking 0o

Some Tips
Most of the Auto CAD commands can be
abbreviated to one or more characteristics
(known as command alias) to invoke from the
command alias) For E.g.: L for Line , C for
Circle.
By default the coordinate display is in absolute
format. You can change this to relative
coordinate system. Right Click the coordinate
display at the status bar and choose the required
coordinate system.

Some Tips
Most of the Auto Cad 2005 commands are
featured with an Options. The options of a
command are shown within square
brackets [ ] separated by forward slashes
/ . You can select one of the options by
typing the capitalized letter(s) of the
option.

Drawing Commands
Line : L
Line command allows you to create a line
where the end points are specified by two
dimensional or three dimensional coordinates.
A

Undo
You can undo the most recently drawn line
segment by entering the option U in the specify
next point : U

Close
The Close option joins the very last point in a
series of line segments that you had drawn
using the line command, thus forming a close
shape.

Note
Press Escape to abruptly quit from the
current command
Use
(Backspace) to remove any
topographical errors.

Example 1.
Command: _line specify first point : 3,3
Specify next point or [Undo] : 7,3
Specify next point or [Undo]: 5,5
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: C

Example 2.Relative Rectangular C.S.
