 Stem-changing verbs
• A stem-changer has a change in the
vowels in the stem.
• This change occurs in every form
EXCEPT the nosotros (and vosotros)
form.
• These are called boot verbs.
 Stem-changers: o>ue
• The following verbs are classified as
o>ue stem-changers.
• dormir (to sleep)
• Use dormir hasta to say you sleep until
a certain time.
• almorzar (to eat lunch)
• volver (to return/go back)
• llover (to rain)
 Stem-changers: o>ue
• SO, when you conjugate these verbs,
the “o” will change to a “ue” in every
form except the nosotros form.

**Remember: There’s NO
stem-change in the NOsotros form.
Stem-changers: dormir (o>ue)

 Why call them “boot verbs?”
• Because, if you drew a boot and put a verb
chart over it, the only forms that would
change are inside the boot!

• Write the verb charts for the following:
• almorzar
• volver almuerzo
vuelvo almorzamos

 llover (o>ue)
• You will only use the singular 3rd person
form of llover.
• I can’t rain! Only “it” can.

llueve = it rains
 Stem-changing verbs: e>ie
• These follow the same pattern as o>ue
stem-changers. Only, the e changes to
an ie in the stem.

**Remember: there is NO
stem-change in the
NOsotros form.

• The following are e>ie stem-changing verbs:
• empezar (to begin)
• use empezar a + inf. to say
what you start to do
• merendar (to have a snack)
• entender (to understand)

• querer (to want)
