Socio-cultural diversity concerns

aspects of culture that can influence
an individuals interactions with
others of different backgrounds.

Concepts of race, society and social
class
Types of belief system, language,
custom and gender practices among
multicultural society in Malaysia.
How the understanding of various
cultures in Malaysia is able to assist
in the inculcation of unity among
various races.

class
Race
refers to a big group of people who have
moral ideals and law which is bounded by
desire and one that experiences past history
and stays within the territory of a country.
the emergence of a race is related to the
similarities that each individual in a group
share the similar characteristics such as
common language, religion, cultures, live in a
similar territory, live in the same country and
become a citizen.

Society
Society is classified as a group of people who are related and
they perform activities collectively while living together. The
importance of this kind of interaction between individuals
which determines a particular pattern of life and there is a
distinct communication system (Roucek and Warren, 1979).
According to Syed Ismail & Ahmad Subki (1965) community
refers to a group of people living together and they are
dependent on their culture, In addition, each community has
the same objective to be achieved. Most of the time, these
people live together and they are interdependent in the
organization. They also share a cultural heritage system
which are reflected in the unique needs that existed in the
lives of people.

Social class
Social class refers to the status or position of
one group in the social hierarchy that reflects
whether one group was in the upper class,
middle or lower class. During the age of the
Malacca Sultanate, the Malay society is
divided into two groups, that is the
government and the citizens. The
government consists of the King, Bangsawan,
Speaker, and Headman. Meanwhile, the
citizens consist of ordinary people.

Types of belief system, language,

custom and gender practices
Belief system
a state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in
some person or thing.
In the context of religion, belief is part of the core of moral
development.

Language
a communication tool used by every member in the community in
any one race to communicate and interact with each other.
In addition, language has also become an important medium of
information shared between members of society.

Custom
The rules and norms that are and have been in practice by a group
of people through many generations.

Gender

Awareness
Recognize differences as diversity rather
than abnormal behaviour or inappropriate
responses to the environment.
Respect the benefits of diverse values and
behaviours to people and to the
organization.
Accept that each culture finds some values
more important and some behaviours more
desirable than others.
Have a clear sense of your individual culture

 Understand the effect that historic distrust has

on present-day interactions.
Recognize your own ethnocentricity the ways
in which you stereotype, judge, and
discriminate, and your emotional reactions to
conflicting cultural values.
Understand how the culture of your organization
affects those whose culture is different.
Recognize the similarities that are shared across
the human culture, regardless cultures and
groups safety, good health, education and the
ability to pursue and achieve our potential.

Develop Diversity Competence

Learn factual information about other
cultures and groups with different
backgrounds.
See a movie about other cultural lifestyles.
Compare how you live your life to what
youve seen on film.
Read about cross-gender differences in
communication styles.
Develop a good relationship with someone
from a different culture or identity group.

 Attend a cultural event, celebration,

or holiday program of a different
culture that you have never
experienced before.
- Compare the similarities and differences
of this event/celebration to those of your
cultural group. Find out the meanings
behind the differences.

Show more patience when working

and interacting with people who have
different learning styles than you.

 Explore your family history and

background. Where did your
ancestors come from before arriving
in this country? What are the special
customs and traditions that were
shared from generation to
generation? Interview and older
member of your family.
