Q2: How does your

product represent
particular social
groups?
My magazine is a direct representation of pop.
Within my magazine, I have shown this through
many ways. The social groups that are being
represented within my magazine are age, gender,
race, and to some extent class.

Age
The target audience for my magazine would be teenagers, I have
represented this through the protagonist on my magazine as she is a
teenager the age of 16. I used an individual that is the same age range
of my target audience to show that initially the magazine is represented
to them; you can tell that the individual in the image is a teenager due
to the clothes she is wearing, her top is floral and bright and teenagers
wear similar sort of clothing.
The colours in the magazine also represent the age, as it is usually the
teenagers that prefer bright colours and not old people as they would
prefer colours such as brown and white and black. The age difference
depends on the choice of colour and preference, and typically it is
teenager who lean towards the brighter colour.

The pictures here show the

similarities between clothing,
both are wearing floral tops and
theyre both colourful. This fits
into how I wanted to represent
teenagers thought my
magazine.

Gender
In my magazine, I have reached to both female and male. Typically,
a pop magazine mainly reaches out to females because of the
context and choice of colour used. I have moved away from
conventions because I wanted to do something different and having
a magazine of both genders allows me to include several things.
To represent gender, I have used a girl as my main image, this is
because having a girl allowed both males and females to attract to
the magazine. The girls would be attracted because of fashion, what
the protagonist is wearing whereas the male would be attracted
because of the fact that she is a girl and shes attractive.
To represent the female gender, I used colours such as pink and
purple, stereotypically girls girl them sorts of colours and to some
extent its true and I thought this would be a good way to reach out
to them. Also, as its a pop magazine having colours as such is
following the codes and conventions.
To represent the male gender I added blue and yellow colours, I
didnt add much to my magazine that would show a male
representation because its the female contents that dominates the
male.

Race and Class

The race that I am representing in my magazine is white. My magazines protagonist is white, I
used a white individual because my target audience is white so I felt like it would allow them
to feel more connected to the magazine as the person on the magazine is of their race.
In majority of pop magazines there is a white individual because I think a lot of white people
listen to music, its favoured to white people more than any other race.

The target class for my magazine would be working class, this is because the magazine is
very busy and bright and colourful and not many middle class people would read it because it
doesnt look very sophisticated and posh. Where as working class people would enjoy
reading it because the information given within is relatable to them, the pricing and contents
is decent for someone of a working class to afford it.

Overall
My magazine represents pop magazine in
several ways, in order to reach out to my
target audience had to focus on things that
would enable them to feel connected to my
magazine. My main focus was to be able to
sell my magazine to the target audience,
and in this case it was teenagers of a
working class background that are white.
