POLLUTION

PROBLEMS OF AIR AND WATER POLLUTION

In our daily lives we pollute the air and water without caring about the effects it
could have on us and the environment.

The cars we use release chemicals, including, carbon monoxide and nitrogen
oxides into the atmosphere, which release about a third of pollution in the air. All
of the toxins can cause many of us to get sick.

There is a higher risk of getting cancer with all these toxins in the air.

There are some agricultural practices that can cause air pollution including,
pesticides, fertilizers, and insecticides. The use of pesticides and fertilizers have
grown a lot. It not only causes air pollution, but it can cause water pollution.

These pesticides release ammonia which is a hazardous chemical. We breathe all

these chemicals in and we dont realize what effects it has on us.

PROBLEMS OF AIR AND WATER POLLUTION

CONT.
Water is an essential that we need in order to live. We drink the water that has been
contaminated with many chemicals. Many people just throw their trash in lakes,
rivers, and the ocean. The trash includes, plastic, styrofoam, aluminum, and glass. In
the summer time most of us like to relax in swimming pools, lakes, and beaches,
which is fun but, if the water is contaminated it can cause rashes and health
problems

If you accidentally drink contaminated water it can cause stomach problems as well
as fevers.
It is a fact that, lack of proper sanitation in water leads to diseases like cholera,
malaria, and diarrhea

Another interesting fact is that at least 320 million people in China do not have
access to clean drinking water.

WATER
Water pollution is a problem that was borne in the Industrial Revolution and only worsened as the world became more
industrialized. It is also one of the most important challenges that humanity has to face. If you think about it, clean
water is the most important thing for any human being to have. People can go longer without food and shelter than
they can without clean water. Polluted water makes people sick, and can even threaten their lives. Because water is
necessary for everyone to survive, it should be considered a fundamental human right. If water pollution is not
addressed, then the most basic of human rights is being ignored.
In recent times, water pollution has been exacerbated by the popularization of fracking, which contributes to this
growing problem. We must also remember that water is not only a resource that humans use. Many animals and plants
rely on the sources of freshwater that are currently being polluted by unregulated industries. Water pollution must be
stopped not only for the sake of human survival, but also for the preservation of nature. Birds and fish and plants do
not deserve to be affected by this issue. It is a matter of leaving things for our posterity. Future generations have a
right to enjoy nature just as we do. It is our responsibility to check water pollution before it is too late for all of these
reasons and probably more.
God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand straining, leveling
tempests and floods; but he cannot save them from fools. -- John Muir

AIR

People can go days without food, hours without water, but only minutes without air. We
breathe on average 3,000 gallons of oxygen a day and breathing polluted air will make you
extremely sick, with some pollutants that lead to cancer over time. Air pollution damages a wide
variety of things from plants and lakes to buildings and monuments.
There are many ways for people to reduce air pollution in the world. One way the U.S. has
taken action is by passing stricter laws and acts. The Clean Air Act (passed in 1990) has reduced
carbon monoxide pollution by 51% from 2000 to 2010. This act has also dropped ground-level
ozone pollution by 11%. But people shouldnt stop there, every little bit of effort helps. We can
help reduce air pollution tremendously by not just turning off unused appliances but by
unplugging them, using fluorescent light bulbs, managing heating and cooling, reducing family
waste, carpooling and keeping your car well maintained.

SUMMARY
Pollution, what is it? It can be defined as anything that contaminates our environment. And two things that play a large
factor in doing so are air and water pollution.
Air pollution is the contamination of the Earths atmosphere by the release of biological/harmful materials. Most harmful
materials that are released into the atmosphere (like immense amounts of carbon monoxide) cause many illnesses to
occur. People tend to have watery eyes, breathing problems such as asthma, and have a lot more allergies. However,
we all need to remember that humans are not the only ones being affected here. Plants use our atmospheric air to
carry out everyday processes to give US the Oxygen we need in order to stay alive. Therefore, if we as humans treat air
pollution (through the acts of carpooling, saving energy, etc.) we will not only be saving ourselves, but our environment
as well. On the other hand, as air pollution is a growing issue, water pollution is as well. Water pollution is the
contamination of freshwater. Some ways that water can be contaminated is by the release of chemicals into our
waterways (from fertilizers, pesticides, etc.) and the release of trash into or lakes/oceans/rivers. Saying that, everyone
can conclude the obvious effects of water pollution as it can cause stomach viruses, and numerous amounts of
diseases. And in order to live a healthy lifestyle, it is important for us as earthly inhabitants to take a stand against
water pollution. People can pick up any stray trash, prevent chemicals from falling into the gutter, and decrease the
amount of fracking.
We all know that air and water pollution have been growing issues for years, but when will they finally catch up to us
before its too late?

CONCLUSION
Obviously, pollution, both air and water, pose a serious, but overlooked, global
problem. Without clean air, were breathing airborne toxins. Without clean water,
were drinking diseased, industrial waste water. Pollution doesnt just affect
humans; it affects things in the environment like plants and animals that are crucial
to our survival as well. Therefore, the pollution issue needs to be fixed before it
gets out of hand. Air and water pollution are usually caused by the same sources:
the individual consumer. Like stated before, the easiest, and probably most cost
effective way to reduce pollution is have everyone make an individual effort to
reduce their own usage. Turn off the lights, recycle, carpool, etc. However, this
could also be the most difficult solution since individual cooperation is very hard to
garner and enforce. Industries also are a source of pollution. As stated earlier,
passing restrictions on emission production has had some success in reducing
pollution. Lastly, raising public awareness is an important part of reducing pollution.
People need to know how they are impacting the environment as well as
themselves with the pollution theyre producing.
