Application software is a set of one or more

programs designed to solve a specific problem
or to do a specific task. The programs included
in an application software are called
application programs. The programmers who
prepare application software are called
application programmers.

An application software is the basic requirement

of a computer system in order to perform any
Operation. A computer is not worth using if it is
not loaded with useful application softwares.
These softwares enable the user to perform
multiple tasks on the computer system.

There are literally millions of softwares available

for a wide range of applications.They range from
simple applications such as banking, hospital
administration, insurance, inventory mngmnt.
and tax returns, to complex scientific engnn.
applications like weather forecasting, launching
of space shuttles,oil and natural gas exploration,
design of complex structures like aircrafts,ships,
bridges,sky-rise buildings etc.

The term WORD PROCESSING describes use of hardware

and software to create edit, view, format, store,retrieve
and print documents (written material such as letters,
reports, books etc.). A word processing software enables
us to do all these on a computer system.

and preparing financial statements. It has preinstalled arithmetic functions which makes it
easier to perform tedious calculations.

purposes. A database software is a set of programs
that enable us to create a database, maintain it
( add, delete and update its records), organize its
data in desired fashion and selectively retrieve
useful information from it.

as a teaching and learning tool. A few examples
of such software include those used for teaching
mathematics, grammer, language or any other
subject.

Entertainment software allows a computer to

be used as an entertainment tool. Computer video
games belong to this category of software. Other
