Evaluation Criteria

Resources (material, employees)

Cost (installation, training, employment)

Management (maintenance, repair, training)

Social reactions (religion, culture)

Appropriate Technology (geographic, labor, cost

efficiency)

Additional benefits

Environmental impacts (climate change, pollution,

effects on land)

Introduction
Electricity is preferably used in Sandikhola, but it unreliable.

Aim: Explore and identify a suitable energy supply that will

benefit the community and the environment.

We have decided to look at issues in:

Alternative energy

Cooking technologies

Possible options researched

Wind Power

Solar Power

Biogas

Hydropower

Option 1: Wind Power

Wind power is a renewable energy source that does

not present any environmental issues.
The materials for the wind turbines would need to
come from outside the village
They would have to be placed on flat terrain
Wind is input as kinetic energy and electrical energy
is released

(2)

Option 2: Solar Power

Pros:

Cons:

Clean energy, no pollution

Produced quietly
Cost efficient
Location efficient
Sustainable
Scalable

High installation cost

Electricity is generated
during day time
Can be affected by
weather (and pollution)

Applications:

(3) Solar panels

(4) Solar cooker

Option 3: Biogas

Biogas is created by processing organic matter and

waste into methane.

Biogas presents an alternative to energy and wood

fired cooking and also reduces waste.

The digester plant could be managed

by the community with the proper education

Extra benefits include the production of a

fertilizer and employment

(5)

Option 4: Hydropower

Hydropower is a renewable energy source that is

generated by electrical energy from flowing
water.

Most suitable option is a run-of-river micro-hydro

system

Efficient, reliable, cost effective

Biggest concerns

Lack of research (flow rate, drop, output)

System geographically suitable

Waterways decrease during dry season

(6)

Conclusion

Ranked each of the options based on following

equation:

Option

Score

Wind power

Excluded

Solar Energy

25.3

Biogas

31.65

Hydro power

30.45
