Steps in problem solving

Note down the stresses required [the portions of
interest]
Determine the forces at supports [only where
required]
Determine the internal forces in members [only for
which the stress is asked]
Note down the dimensions of the members, joints,
bolts, pins, supports etc [of interest]
For each stress required, carefully note down the
value of force
Calculate the stresses.

MM222 Strength of Materials

Sample Problem 1.2

What to find?
Diameter (d) of bolt = diameter
of hole = inner dia of the end
Dimension b = outer dia of end
Dimension h = regular width

By Hafiz Kabeer Raza

Spring 2015

MM222 Strength of Materials

Sample Problem 1.2

Diameter (d) of bolt = diameter of hole = inner dia of the end
Allowable shear stress will be considered (100 MPa)

Dimension b = outer dia of end

Allowable normal stress will be taken (175 MPa)

Dimension h = regular width

Allowable normal stress will be taken (175 MPa)
For d
= P/Shearing area
Area = 3.14/4*d2
d = 27.6 mm 28 mm

Cross check the allowable bearing stress

b = 214 MPa < allowable bearing stress (Safe)

For b
= P/maximum normal area
Area = t*(b-d)
b = 62.3 mm 63 mm

For h
= P/Normal area
Area = h*t
h = 34.3 mm 35 mm

Review: Free Body Diagram

Whenever the structure or a member is disconnected from other
supports/members, Forces will be considered at all the points where
the structure/member is joined to any other thing (support/member);
for example
Structure free body diagram
Component free body diagram
Now both the conditions of equilibrium can be applied; provided you
have mentioned the reaction forces in all directions
