Entrepreneurship Development
Programmers (EDPs):
Entrepreneurs play a predominant role
in accelerating the socio-economic
development of a country. EDPs are
necessary to enable them to play the
following roles correctly:
i. To set up small scale ventures.
ii. To manage projects effectively.
iii.To earn adequate profit from these
ventures.
iv.To undertake personal responsibility of
the business.

Objectives of EDPs:
a) Accelerating industrial development by
enlarging the supply of entrepreneurs.
b)Developing entrepreneurial qualities and
motivating the prospective entrepreneurs to
achieve the goal.
c)Enhancing the growth of small and mediumscale enterprise sectors which offer better
potential for employment generation
d)Providing productive self-employment
avenues to a large number of educated and
low educated young men and women
coming out of schools and colleges.
e)Improving performance of small and
medium-scale industries by giving them

f) Enterprise development in rural


and no-industry areas where local
entrepreneurs are not really available
Phases of EDPs
The EDPs normally comprises
of the following three
important phases:
Pre-training phase
Training phase
Post-training phase or followup

Pre-training phase: This phase is the preparatory phase


for launching the programmers. It includes a number of
activities, which are as follows:
i. Identification of operationally suitable area, normally
a district.
ii. Selection of a Training agency to conduct the
Programme, Normally a Govt. Agency, sometimes
Pvt . Agency.
iii. Selection of a project leader to co-ordinate the
programme.
iv. Arrangement of infrastructure facilities for the
programme.
v. Undertaking potential industry
survey/environmental scanning for identification of
good business opportunities.
vi. Contacting the support agencies like DICs, SFCs.
SISI, banks, NSIC, District Magistrate, etc.

Training phase: Training the potential


entrepreneurs and providing them proper
guidance for setting up enterprise constitute
the basic thrust of EDP. Most of the ED
Institutes generally conduct training
programmes of 4-6 weeks duration on full time
basis. Many give certificates , too
Post-training or follow-up phase:
i. To provide a meaningful direction to the
trainees in establishing their units.
ii. To review the progress made by the trainees
in implementation of project.
iii.To review the post-training approach.
iv.To provide escort services to the trainees by
involving financial institution and

EDP CURRICULUM:
The ED institutes usually follow a
uniform course curriculum consisting of
the following:
Introduction to fundamentals of
entrepreneurship.
Motivational inputs.
Management inputs.
Support system services
Project feasibility study
Plant visits/industrial exposure.

Utility of EDPs:

Entrepreneurship Development
Programme, at is now become a National
movement with hundreds of EDPs and
thousands of participants. The actual startup rate ( people who start units after
undergoing training) as a result of EDP
varies between 9 to 50 per cent with a
National average of about 26 percent
Since Entrr. Contribute 95% of industries,
it is essential to train them
They contribute in 800 different sectorsso it is essential to train them

Establishment of specialized institutions at


National level
Specialized Insts. have been set up by
the Government of India to promote
entrepreneurship thru EDPs in the
country. The details of these organizations
are given below:

1.Entrepreneurship Development Institute


of India (EDI): the apex resource agency
for promotion of entrepreneurship and
small scale sector, promoted by
development financing institutions like
IDBI, IFCI, ICICI, SBI and located at
Ahmadabad.

National Science And Technology


Entrepreneurship Development Board
(NSTEDB): In order to focus on special
target groups like science and technology
personnel, the Union Government has
established the NSTEDB, operating under
the Department Of Science and
Technology, Government Of India. It has
strived to spread the message of
entrepreneurship among science and
technology personnel by organizing EDPs.

3. National institute for Entrepreneurship and small


business development (NIESBUD): An organization for
organising and conducting EDP under MINISTRY OF
INDUSTRY, GOVERNMENT OF INDIA and located at Nodia
(UP)
4. Small industries services institutes (SISI): set up by
government of India, having its network of branches in
many States in India
5. National institute for small industry extension and
training (NISIET): under Ministry Of Small Scale
Industries, Government Of India and located Hyderabad
6. Similarly many other Insts. in various States
7. Voluntary agencies like NEN ( National Entrepreneurship
Network) offer many guidelines and progs.

8. Special agencies like Coir Board, Khadi


Commission, Village promotion Councils
also conduct specific EDPs to train Entrr.
9. The DST conducts special Progs.
10. Many Public sector industries give
Training as part of their Welfare efforts
11. Commercial banks support such Progs.
12. Many IITs also conduct short term
programmes
