2) How effective is

the combination of
your main product
and ancillary
texts?
By Lara Falzon

Our combination of our main products (the

trailer, poster, and magazine cover) was
effective as they all obtained the same style
and aspects unified in order to conform the
conventions of the horror genre and promote
our film The final Plea.
We achieved this through different elements
including; the colour schemes and fonts,
lighting and overall appearance, that allowed
us to create a combined packaged that held
a unified marketing image that all visually
matched.

One way in which we combined our products to create

a cohesive image across all three products was
through the use of typography. Through research and
planning it was clear that numerous films particularly
look at font choice, size and colour was a significant
aspect in conforming to the horror genre. Therefore
when considering our use of font, we used Bebas Kai
and as it is a simplistic font which is typically used
within the horror genre. As mentioned in question one,
we took inspiration from the films The Purge and
youre next who both use a monochrome colour
scheme, which is effective as it is visibly recognisable.
We replicated the same colouring within our
productions, However we also used a red hint within
in all three products, which highlights that the
combination of our main tasks was effective in
creating a unified marketing image and denoting the
horror genre, a deep colours like red, black and white
is usually associated with the horror genre. In addition
we were able to link our ancillary tasks by using the
main title font and colouring off white) of The Final

COLOURSCHEME/PALETTE-TONE,HUE,SATURATION

Another way in which we unified all ancillary tasks was through the use
of colouring, including tone, hue and saturation that had a significant
impact on the overall look of all three products. For example when
considering the colouring of our main ancillary tasks we choice dark, dull,
bold colouring in order to conform to the horror genre (blacks, white and
red). In this way we were able to create a cohesive image across all three
products and in addition conform to the horror genre. In addition we
altered the shadowing, mid tone contrast and highlights in order to make
the lighting and contrast to create a melodramatic effect, in addition
there is a link between the three and developing an image or identity for
our film project. In addition we also made a clear connection between
the magazine and the poster and trailer, through the use of the black
and white, in addition we also attempt to enhance the grey by changed
the hue alongside the contrast on Abode Photoshop. Similarly we were
able to incorporated this within the trailer through the use of the colour
correction tool and altering the mid, tones, blacks, whites and sat over
every single shot, in order to reduce light hearted colour and increase a
sinister feel within the colouring of the shots by making them dull and
dark. Finally, we also created our poster on Photoshop Abode, by using
the colour matching tool and the paint brush, we were able colour over a
photo taken of the mask, this made the original colouring stand out and
was much more bold. However we also used the base of the mask as an
off greyish colour and the background get black to connote the unknown
conforming the horror genre, but also highlights a link between the three
products.

Trailer

Another way we created a cohesive image within all three ancillary tasks was through
the main marketing image in order to promote The Final Plea. From looking at previous
horror marketing images, for example Gone Girl it was evident they used the main
character also within their film posters and even promoting their film production within
magazines using their main characters. We combined this within our production however
we challenged the usual conventions, and used our masked man as our main coverage
in order to promote to the wider audience. This creates a unique selling point, as
throughout the trailer the antagonist was masked and unseen in order to create mystery,
we also used with within the poster, as the masked clown was the coverage, however
the audience are only able to see half the clown, again creating a sense of the unknown,
giving it a sinister feel. But on the other hand we uncovered the masked villain as the
audience are able to see the actor behind the mask and give their own account on the
film The Final Plea, due to the fact that are antagonist is on all three ancillary tasks, the
audience recognise the character and is able to align themselves. This creates intrigue
for the audience and therefore makes our marketing package very effective. Moreover
this this creates an effective main marketing image as it is unique, and exclusive in
comparison to other marketing packages we have analysed. In addition elements that
include colour scheme and font also have a huge impact on the effectiveness of our
marketing packaging as it unifies all three products are connected and the audience are
aware that this is a package, and therefore is related to our target audience, of 15-24
year olds.
