To Serve
Diakonos – Greek
dia + konos
“to raise a dust by
your hurry to serve.”
John 13:12-17
12 After washing their feet, he

put on His robe again and sat

down and asked, “Do you
understand what I was
13
doing? You call me ‘Teacher’
and ‘Lord,’ and you are right,
because that’s what I am.
John 13:12-17 (cont.)
14 And since I, your Lord and

Teacher, have washed your

feet, you ought to wash each
15
other’s feet. I have given
you an example to follow. Do
16
as I have done to you. I tell
you the truth, slaves are not
John 13:12-17 (cont.)
greater than their master. Nor
is the messenger more
important than the one who
sends the message. Now17

that you know these things,

God will bless you for doing
them.
Serving …
1. Brings us blessing!
Hebrews 6:10
For God is not unjust. He will
not forget how hard you have
worked for Him and how you
have shown your love to Him
by caring for other believers,
as you still do.
Serving …
1. Brings us blessing!
2. Brings us rewards!
Matthew 20:25-28
25 But Jesus called them

together and said, “You know

that the rulers in this world
lord it over their people, and
officials flaunt their authority
over those under them. But 26

among you it will be different.

Matthew 20:25-28 (cont.)
Whoever wants to be a leader
among you must be your
27
servant, and whoever
wants to be first among you
must become your slave.
28 For even the Son of Man

came not to be served but to

Matthew 20:25-28 (cont.)
serve others and to give His
life as a ransom for many.”
Serving …
1. Brings us blessing!
2. Brings us rewards!
3. Brings promotion!
1 Peter 4:8-11
8 Most important of all,

continue to show deep love

for each other, for love covers
a multitude of sins.
9 Cheerfully share your home

with those who need a meal

or a place to stay.
1 Peter 4:8-11 (cont.)
10 God has given each of you a

gift from his great variety of

spiritual gifts. Use them well
to serve one another. Do11

you have the gift of speaking?

Then speak as though God
Himself were speaking
1 Peter 4:8-11 (cont.)
through you. Do you have the
gift of helping others? Do it
with all the strength and
energy that God supplies.
Then everything you do will
bring glory to God through
Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 4:8-11 (cont.)
All glory and power to Him
forever and ever! Amen.
Serving …
1. Brings us blessing!
2. Brings us rewards!
3. Brings promotion!
4. Brings God glory!
To Serve
• to supply something
needed or desired
• to answer the needs of
another
• to provide services that
benefits or helps others
Galatians 5:13
For you have been called to
live in freedom, my brothers
and sisters. But don’t use
your freedom to satisfy your
sinful nature. Instead, use
your freedom to serve one
another in love.
To Self Satisfy
• to make yourself “happy”
• to direct energy toward self
gratification
• to take action that primarily
benefits self
Serving …
To voluntarily
attend to the
needs of another.
Denies Self
Mark 8:34
Then, calling the crowd to join
his disciples, he said, “If any of
you wants to be my follower,
you must turn from your
selfish ways, take up your
cross, and follow me.
Take To The Cross
• desires and needs
• independence
• pride
• stubbornness
• rebellion
Humility
James 4:6
But He gives more grace.
Therefore it says, "God
opposes the proud, but gives
grace to the humble."
Other-centered
Philippians 2:4
Don’t look out only for your
own interests, but take an
interest in others, too.
Experiencing God
again and again,
will develop
great faith,

in 2010!
