describes knowledge unique to the project

management field that overlaps other
management disciplines.
O The PMBOK describes :A. Nine Knowledge Areas.
B. Project Management Life Cycle.
C. Five project Management Process Groups

Project Management Knowledge

Areas
O Project Integration Management :- It is

concerned with coordinating all aspects of the

project plan and is highly interactive. It involves
identifying and defining all work of the project.
O Project Scope Management :- It is concerned
with defining all work of the project and only the
work the work needed to successfully meet the
project goals .
O Project Time Management :- It deals with
completing the project in a timely manner .
O Project Cost Management :- it establishes budget
and keeps watch over costs to ensure that the
project is within the approved budget.

O Project quality Management :- It insures that the

project meets the requirements that it was undertaken

to produce.
O Project Human Resource Management :-It involves
all aspect of people management and personal
interaction including leading, coaching, etc.
O Project Communications Management :- It is related
to general communication skill but they encompass
much more than an exchange of information.
O Project Risk Management :- It is concerned with
identifying, analyzing and planning for potential risks,
both positive and negative that may impact the project.
O Project Procurement Management :- It includes the
process involved in purchasing goods or services from
vendors, contractors and suppliers.

Project Life Cycle

O The project life cycle defines the phases that connect

the beginning of a project to its end.

It generally defines :-

What technical work has to be done in

each
phase?
When the deliverables are to be generated
in each phase and how each deliverable is
reviewed, verified and validated?
How to control and validated?
Who is involved in each phase?

Five Project Management Process Group

O The project management process

describes what you need to do to manage

the project.

risk information and recommend
preventive action as needed.
O Maintain and provide information to
support status reporting, progress
measurement, and forecasting.
O Monitor the implementation of approved
changes.

.. Closing .
O Generate the reports
O Delivery of your project

Microsoft Office project

O Microsoft office project is used to assist

project managers to develop plans, assign

resources to task, track progress, manage
budget and analyze workloads.
O Server and Standalone version available

Unique Features of MSP

O Create a well formed ms project schedule
O Assign resources to tasks
O Resource leveling skills and concepts
O Understand task types and the schedule

formula
O Analyze resource utilization
O Track progress using MSP
O Customize and format the MSP Views and look
and feel
O Baseline, update and track projects
O Generate reports and take status reports

Difference between MSP & Primavera

O Concept of MSP is DPM (Desktop Project

Management ) which is for handling only

one project at a time.
O P6 is EPM ( Enterprise Project Management)
which is for handling number of projects in
the organization.

O MSP is for Project Manager level.

O P6 is for Portfolio Manager, Program

Manager and Project Manager.

Duration
O In MSP, duration cannot be entered in

year.
O In P6, duration can be entered in year
also.
O We can find out the duration in any unit
at any time in P6.
O Sub unit of duration is also possible in P6.
O E.g. 1d 2h or 3w 3d

Location
O In P6 all the data will be saved in single

database whereas it is not in MSP.

O You can create only WBS in MSP.

O In P6 you can create OBS and WBS.

Currency

O No currency option in MSP.

O We can set the exchange rate and

based on that we can find out the

cost in different currency.

Resources

O Resources in MSP has been restricted

as 10 lakhs.
O It is unlimited in P6.

Roles

O Roles cannot be mentioned in MSP.

O It can be mentioned in P6 which will

be very much useful at the time of

assigning resources.

Baseline
O Only 11 baseline can be saved at a

time in MSP.
O 50 baselines can be saved at a time.

Comparison
O Projects cannot be compared in MSP.
O Can be compared in P6.

Each activity should have one Predecessor and Minimum
one successor.

Precedence Diagramming
Method(PDM)
O The PDM refers to a specific project

management technique in which the project

management team employs a schedule
network diagramming technique to graphically
represent known and preexisting schedule
activities via use of boxes.
O The nodes and box sharing logical relationship
are linked together via the use of a line
O The benefit of using PDM is that the project
management team can view all schedule
activities and their relationship to each other .

.. Types of PDM ..

.. PERT & CPM ..

PERT
O PERT- Program Evaluation Review Technique
O PERT is a network analysis technique using

three point estimates.

O PERT is used to estimate project duration
when there is a high degree of uncertainty
about the individual activity duration
estimates.
O PERT uses probabilistic time estimates based
on using optimistic, pessimistic and most
likely estimates of activity.

.. PERT Calculation ..
O PERT Formula for calculating estimates

= ( O + 4M + P ) /6
----> O- Optimistic

-----> P- Pessimistic
-----> M- Most Likely

.. CPM ..
O CPM-Critical Path Method
O CPM is a project network analysis technique

used to manage total project duration.

O A critical path for a project is the series of
activities that determines the earliest time
by which the project can be completed.
O A critical path can contain a series of tasks
or even a single task.
O The critical path is the longest path through
the network diagram and has the least
amount of slack or float.

CPM Variables
O Variables are:-

Early Start (ES)

Late Start (LS)
Early Finish (EF)
Late Finish (LF)
CPM uses two form of movement between the activity
1. Forward pass
2. Backward pass
Formula :ES = Max pred. of LS
LF = min succ. Of
EF
LS = ES + duration
EF = LF - duration
Condition if =
ES EF =0
LS LF
=0

.. Gantt Chart ..
O Gantt chart provide a standard format for

displaying project schedule information by

listing project activities and their corresponding
start and finish dates in a calendar format.
O Symbols includes:-- A Black Diamond milestone or significant
event on a project. Has zero duration.
-- Thick Black Bars Summery tasks
-- Lighter Horizontal Bar Tasks
-- Arrows Dependencies between tasks.

CALANDER IN MS PROJECT
O Steps for calendar setting
1) Planning for calendar
2) Setting calendar
3) Assigning calendar to Gantt chart
4) Assigning calendar to Project
5) Additional setting

Calendars
O Calendars - Microsoft Project uses four types of calendars to determine

resource availability and how tasks themselves are scheduled:

O

Base calendar - A calendar used as a template on which the project

calendar, resource calendars, or task calendars are based. Three base
calendars are provided with Microsoft Project: Standard (8:00 A.M. to
5:00 P.M., with an hour off for lunch); 24-Hours; Night Shift

Project calendar The calendar used to designate the default work

schedule for all tasks in a project. Copy the base calendar that most
closely mirrors what you want, then customize the new calendar to
suit the projects needs.

Resource calendar - Microsoft Project creates individual resource

calendars based on the calendar specified for that resource within the
resource sheet. Typically this will be the project calendar. You can modify
the calendar to indicate nonworking time (such as vacations) by clicking
on the Working Time tab of the Resource Information dialog box.

O Task calendar - Tasks are scheduled based on the working times in the

project calendar. However, you can customize the working times if you
have tasks to be completed at different times, especially tasks that are
independent of resources, such as equipment that runs and completes
tasks throughout project non-working time.
