What is a Diesel Power

Plant?
A

Diesel power station (also known as Stand-by

power station) uses a diesel engine as prime
mover for the generation of electrical energy.

This

kind of power station can be used to

produce only limited amounts of electrical
energy.

In

most countries, these power stations are

used asemergency supply stations.

How does a Diesel Power

Plant operate?
The

diesel burns inside the engine and the

products of this combustion act as the
working fluid to produce mechanical energy.
The diesel engine drives alternator which
converts mechanical energy into electrical
energy.

What is a Diesel Engine?

A

Diesel engine is an engine which uses diesel

as fuel that is working based on the principle
of compression ignition, and operates on a
four-stroke cycle.

Compression Ignition
The

concept behind compression ignition

involves using the latent heat built up by
highly compressing air inside a combustion
chamber as the means for igniting fuel.

The

process involves compressing a charge of

air inside the combustion chamber to a ratio
of approximately 21:1

Compression Ignition
This

high level of compression builds

tremendous heat and pressure inside the
combustion chamber just as fuel is primed for
delivery.

An

injection nozzle plumbed into the

combustion chamber sprays a mist of precisely
metered fuel into the hot compressed air where
upon it bursts into a controlled explosion that
turns the rotating mass inside the engine.

develops required power. It is generally directly
coupled to the generator
Air Filter and Supercharger the air filter
removes the dust from the air which is taken
by the
engine while the supercharger
increases the pressure of the air supplied to
the engine to increase its power

System Plant
includes the silencers and
connecting ducts.
Fuel System includes the storage tank, fuel
pump, strainers and heater
Cooling System includes water circulating
pumps, cooling towers or spray ponds and
water filtration plant

Lubrication
SystemPlant
includes the oil pumps, oil
tanks, filters, coolers ad connecting pipes. It
reduces friction of moving parts and reduce wear
and tear of engine parts

Starting System includes compressed air tanks.

It supplies compressed air to start the engine
Governing System maintains the speed of the
engine constant irrespective of load on the plant

Advantages of a
Diesel Power Plant
It

is a reliable stand-by electrical source for

emergency situations.

The

design and layout of the plant are quite

simple

It

occupies less space as the number and size

of the auxiliaries is small

It

can be located at any place

Advantages of a
Diesel Power Plant
It

can be started quickly and it can pickup

load in a short time

It

requires less quantity of water for cooling

The

overall cost is much less than that of

steam power station of the same capacity

There

are no standby losses

Advantages of a
Diesel Power Plant
The

thermal efficiency of the plant is higher

than that of a steam power station

It

requires less operating staf

Disadvantages of a
Diesel Power Plant
The

plant has high running charges as the fuel

(diesel) used is costly

The

plant doesnt work satisfactorily under

overload conditions for a longer period

The

plant can only generate small power

Disadvantages of a
Diesel Power Plant
The

cost of lubrication is generally high

The

maintenance charges are generally high

These

plants emit green house gases that

pollute the environment
