Research problem

Why research problem???

The formulation of research problem is

the first and most important step of the
research journey.
A research
problem is just like a foundation of a
building .
The type and design
depend upon the foundation .
It is
impossible to identify the shortest root.

The sources of research

problems : There are usually many sources of research problem
. Most likely sources to which one may turn as
under:
1. The
class room discussions , collage universities
,community problems are obvious source of
research problems.
2.social issues/developments and technological
changes are constantly bringing forth new problems
and new opportunities for research.
3.Specialized sources such as
research bullets , research reports ,are rich sources
of research problems.

Clinical practice is also a rich

source of research problem.

Criteria of good research problem:

Following are the list of tentative conditions should be satisfied ;
1. Novelty : It is not involve any objectionable duplication ,there is
constant need of verification findings of the previous
investigation using latest devices and techniques.
2 . Interesting : The problem should be interesting for the
research himself . If he is not interested in it he will not be able
to face.
3 .Relevance : The selected problem should be relevant to
your profession.
4. Availability of data: the researcher should ensure about the
availability of valid and reliable data.
5 .Availability of guidance and cooperation ; Every research
activity needs the patronage of a guide the researcher may
need the cooperation from various institutions and individuals.

6. Feasibility . The suitability of the problem for

researcher is the matter of its feasibility.
7.Avalibilty of other facilities . The investigator
should be able to meet the expenses involved in
data gathering equipment , printing, test material ,
traveling writing the research report postage.
8. Immediate application: The research should help
the researcher to solve an immediate problem.
9. Level of research : It is another criteria to help in
the selection of a problem.

10. Cost effectiveness : The good

research problem should be
economical in all respect.
11. Ethical issues : For good research
problem it is advisable that it should
be free from all ethical issues.

Steps in the development of a

research problem
The most important part of research journey is
the formulation of research problem .
These are the steps in the formulation of a
research problem:
Step 1:- choosing a research topic ,
The first step is selecting a topic.
Step 2 ;- selection a specific topic :
Let we choose a broad topic PUBLIC HEALTH .the
public health is covering a various aspects lie
public health engineering , public health ,
awareness program and so on.

Step 3..> Narrowing a broad topic:

Following are techniques to narrow down a broad
topic into specific topic:
a. Examine the existing the literature.
b. Talk over the ideas with supervisors, seniors.
c. Define the aim of desire outcomes of the study.
d. Follow the instructions
e. Narrow the topic
f. Extend an existing theory to new topic

Step 4..>formulating a research

question :
The formulation of research problem is a
creative work researcher often begin with
an interest in broad area and develop a
topic into a more specific research problem.
Step 5.> Statement of problem;
A statement of problem an expression of
the disturbing situation that needs
investigations or solutions.

Research objectives
After deciding what to study , and why? The
next step is to formulate the study objectives.
The objective of research summarizes what is
to be achieve by the researcher and the study
objectives are goals, the investigator set out to
achieve through the study
The specific objectives are : To identify the full range of economic
,psychosocial, health/nursing care and other
needs of patients and their families affected by
AIDS.

To determine the economic cost of

CHBC to the patient and family as
well as to the formal CHBC programs
them.
to relate the calculated cast to the
quality of care provided to the
patient by the family.

Why should research objectives

be developed
The formulation of objectives will
help you to:
Focus
Avoid
Organize
Are realistic
Use action verbs

Requirement of study objective:

They should be formulated clearly.
They must meet the purpose of
study.
They should be expressed in
measureable terms.
They must be testable

The most well known method for

setting objectives is a S.M.A.R.T
S_> SPECIFIC (detailed ,well defined)
M_> MEASURABLE (numbers,
quality , comparison)
A_> ACHIEVABLE (actionable)
R_>REALISTIC (considering
resources)
T_>TIME-BOUND (a defined time
line).
