Introduction:The process of societys transformation from


a rural to a urban population is defined as
urbanisation.
In India urban defined asA Minimum population of 5000 persons.
At least 75% of the male main workers
engaged in non-agricultural activities.
A density of population at least 400 per
sq.km.

Urban Renewal Mission
Launched by govt. of india under ministry of urban

development on 3 dec 2005.


Need:in india urban popoulation 28% in 2011. urban
population may increase to about 40% of total
population by the year 2021.
Identified cities under jnnum:Category-A megacities 7 no
Category-B million plus cities 28 no which of
them 4 (Bhopal, Jabalpur, Indore,ujjain) in M.P.
Category- C
cities with population less than
one million population. 28 no

the aim is to planned development of identified cities.


Focus on efficiency in urban infrastructure, service
delivery mechanism, community participation and
accountability of ULBs.
Special focus on urban renewal programme.
Provision of basic services improved housing, water
supply and sanitation, education, health and social
security.
Aim:

Funding:The total investment envisaged is Rs. 1,25,000 crore


over a seven year. In which Total central govt funding
will be Rs. 50,000 crore remaining Contributes states
and municipalities.

Key issues in
implementation: Lack of capacity of ULBs.
Lack of political support in some areas.
Resistance from states/ULBs to implement

reforms.

Suggestion:Improve planning and ensure peoples

participation in it.
Main concentrate on water, sanitation and
public transport.
Funding for visible, big projects.
Technical assistance to individual states for
capacity building, project monitoring systems.
Technical assistance for specific weak states
and regions.
