ABSTRACT
Instrument used for drawing ellipses it's a mechanism
obtained by having two sliding pairs and two turning pairs.
The Elliptical Trammel (also known as the Elliptical
Trammel, or the Trammel of Archimedes) is a simple
mechanism which can trace an exact elliptical path.
An ellipsograph is a trammel of Archimedes intended to
draw, cut, or machine ellipses, e.g. in wood or other sheet
materials they can be used to draw smaller ellipses but only
draw smaller ellipses but only draw half at a time, having to
be reversed to draw the complete ellipse.

INTRODUCTION

The Elliptical Trammel (also known as the Trammel of

Archimedes) is a simple mechanism which can trace an exact
elliptical path. The trammel of Archimedes, or ellipsograph, is a
mechanical device that implements this principle.
The
mechanism can be used with a router to cut ellipses from board
material. An ellipsograph is a trammel of Archimedes intended
to draw, cut, or machine ellipses, e.g. in wood or other sheet
materials. An ellipsograph has the appropriate instrument
(pencil, knife, router, etc.) attached to the rod. Usually the
distances a and b are adjustable, so that the size and shape of
the ellipse can be varied.

PARTS OF TRAMMEL
The elliptical trammel consists of the
following parts.
Wooden base
Sliding wooden blocks
Handle for drawing ellipse
Nails for attachment

FUTURE OUTPUT USING ELLIPTICAL

TRAMMEL MECHANISM

The initial concept behind the Stiller-Smith

Engine was stimulated by a children's toy
called a "do-nothing" machine. The toy is a
simple wooden block divided into quarters by
two grooves through which two small wooden
pieces slide when the handle is turned. If the
linkage that constitutes the handle is rotated at
constant angular velocity the action of the
sliders is sinusoidal, linear motion.

ENGINE CONCEPT

ABOUT CONCEPT ENGINE

The Stiller-Smith Mechanism first consider the
motion of the double-cross slider. It is a
pictorial representation illustrating that the
center point of the cross-slider link travels in a
circular path. Previous attempts to utilize a
double-cross slider took advantage of this
translation component.

ENGINE DESCRIPTION
Though the Stiller-Smith Mechanism is the resulting
engine has planar characteristics, there is a certain 3dimensionality to the actual construction. The
mechanism may be used in a number of configurations,
however, the fundamental version involves four cylinders
in a cruciform layout. Each piston is directly connected
to another piston across from it via a non-articulating
connecting rod. This arrangement promotes an efficient
exhaust cycle opposite the firing cylinder. The two
connecting rods are normally perpendicular to each
other .

APPLICATIONS
It is used in automatic tool changer in a machining.
Elliptical Trammels are used for drawing large
ellipses.
They can be used to draw smaller ellipses but only
draw one half at a time, having to be reversed to
draw the complete ellipse.
By keeping sharp edged materials in the space
provided on handle materials of elliptical shape
can be carved out.

ADVANTAGES
It is less expensive compared to metallic
board.
No much noise is produced.
It is portable.
Smooth working due to varnished
wooden blocks.

CONCLUSION
Elliptical trammel is inversion of four bar
mechanism by fixing a link which to provide
rotary motion to other link and by using
elliptical trammel we can draw an ellipse. For
construction of elliptical trammel we can use
wood as a material for perfect demonstration.
