The Post-2015 Development

Agenda: The Sustainable
Development Goals
Social Investment Focused
Agenda: Chief Executive Officers
Consultation
19 May 2015

Background

The MDGs goals (8), targets (18 originally and revised to 21),
and indicators (48 originally and revised to 60) were set in
2000 to be attained by 2015.
However, during MDGs +10 Summit (2010) mixed results were
reported for MDGs, across and within regions and countries.
It became obvious that ALL DEVELOPING countries WILL NOT
attain ALL the MDGs and targets by 2015.
In Kenya, the current MDGs status report (2013) indicates
mixed progress with good progress in some goals while others
are lagging behind.
By 2014, the Government in collaboration with the UN system
developed the MDGs Acceleration Framework and Action Plan,
which identified lagging MDGs as Maternal (Goal 5) and
Neonatal (Goal 4) Health as two critical lagging MDGs in
Kenya.

Co-chairs of the Open Working Group (OWG) Amb.

Macharia Kamau (Kenya) and Amb. Csaba Krsi
(Hungary)

Background

(contd)

In June 2012, governments agreed to launch a

process to develop a set of SDGs based on the
Outcome Document of Rio + 20. They called for
establishing an Open Working Group (OWG) to
elaborate a proposal for the SDGs.
National (11 thematic) Consultations with
stakeholders held in 88 countries including 26 in SubSaharan Africa led by Governments and the UN with
over 7 million people participating in the online
survey-MY World (including 2m from Africa) and
20,000 from Kenya
The Open Working Group finalized and adopted a set
of 17 goals and 169 targets on 19th July 2014
Report was presented to the 69th United Nations
General Assembly in September 2014

The Secretary Generals

Synthesis Report

The General Assembly agreed that the proposal

of the OWG will be the main basis for a concise
set of SDGs that will encapsulate a truly
transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda.

Finalized SGs Synthesis Report: Entitled The

Road to Dignity by 2030: Ending Poverty,
Transforming All Lives and Protecting the
Planet

This report is an input to the intergovernmental

negotiations and charts a roadmap to achieve
dignity for all people in the next 15 years

The 6 Essential Elements for

Delivering the Sustainable
Development Goals

Suggested Roadmap for the

Implementation of the SDGs in Kenya

Domestication of the SDGs into national and subnational contexts and development blueprints.
Mapping of all relevant stakeholders for the
domestication and implementation of the SDGs at
the national and county levels.
Costing of the SDGs at both national and county
levels
The generation of timely and reliable
disaggregated data to inform effective
development planning and management.
Establishment of a robust and integrated
monitoring and evaluation system, which must be
an integral part of the domestication process.

Way Forward

Continue to further the debate at national

and county levels on the SDGs
Ensure that all stakeholders including those
represented in this forum participate in the
debate
Development Partners, Private Sector,
Foundations and NGOs to assist in
advocacy, domestication, implementation
and furthering the goals at all levels with
emphasis at the grassroots
Post 2015 Partnership Platform for
Philanthropy launched in Kenya as the first

UN Focus
UNDAF fully aligned to MTP II
UN and Government agreed on four
strategic results areas in the UNDAF
Transformative Governance
Human Capital Development
Inclusive and Sustainable Economic
Growth
Environmental Sustainability, Land
Management and Human Security

UN Focus

The UN system is supporting the

implementation of the MAF, with focus on the
15 most vulnerable counties to maternal
deaths (almost 98% of maternal deaths occur
in these counties). This support will be
replicated in other counties until 47 counties
are covered.
It is also continuing to support the First
Ladys Beyond Zero Campaign through
technical and other interventions
The UN system is also committed to support
the domestication, costing and
implementation of the SDGs in Kenya
