Software Assurance (SA)
Licensing for the Windows Client OS

The Need for a New Licensing Model for

Windows

Why cant existing Windows licensing apply to VDI?

The Windows OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)
license is tied to the hardware
Full packaged product (FPP) use rights are very restrictive,
as they were not designed for VDI

Why choose the access device as the unit for VDI

licensing?
Abstracts datacenter architecture and complexity
Aligns with physical desktop licensing rules

What Windows Licensing for VDI

Looks Like
The Virtual Machines (VM)
in the datacenter do not
need to be licensed.

Windows needs to be licensed

even on non-Microsoft VDI
technology.
Each access device needs either a
Windows SA (Software Assurance)
or Windows VDA (Virtual Desktop
Access) license.

What Is Windows VDA?

Windows Virtual Desktop Access (VDA) is a device based annual subscription program for
devices that dont qualify for SA to license virtual copies of Windows 7, Windows Vista ,
and Windows XP.
Designed specifically for devices that do not qualify for Software Assurance (SA)
Thin Clients (eg. Windows Embedded devices)
Consumer devices (eg. iPads)
Third party devices (eg. contractor PCs)
PCs that do not have SA coverage

Retail price is $100/device/year*

Includes Windows Client Software Assurance benefits
Available through popular VL channels such as Open Value,
Open Value subscription, Select Plus, and Enterprise Agreement (EA)

* Price is NL USD only. Please check with your local Microsoft account team for prices and discount level applicable to your region.

Per Device

Windows SA / VDA greatly benefit virtual desktops

Improved Business Continuity
Install Windows on any
combination of hardware
and storage
Unlimited movement between
servers and storage
Reassignment rights to another
device after 90 days, or in the
case of endpoint failure

Tremendous Value
Single license allows
concurrent access for up to 4
VMs
Includes SA benefits such as
24*7 call support, training
vouchers, access to Enterprise
versions of Windows, etc.
Option to install WinTPC and
purchase Microsoft Desktop
Optimzation Pack (MDOP)

Flexibility to Roam
Single primary user of a
Windows
VDA / Client SA device can
access their VDI desktop while
roaming on non-corporate
devices, such as a home PC or
public kiosk
VDI Suites, MDOP, and
Microsoft Office SA also support
roaming
Roaming rights are not

SA / VDA Beyond VDI

Software Assurance (SA) / Virtual Desktop Access (VDA) can be used to
license virtual copies of Windows running locally.
SA / VDA provides the right for up to 4
concurrent Windows VMs

Common Virtual Desktop

Infrastructure (VDI) Licensing
Scenarios

Scenario 1 Standard Users

Scenario
My company has 100 corporate
PCs covered under SA that need to
access our VDI environment.
However, we only have 80 users
and only 50 VMs are used at any
one time.

Scenario 2 Shift Workers

Scenario
My company has 100 PCs with SA,
with 300 workers accessing our VDI
environment in shifts. At any time,
150 VMs are being accessed using
VDI.

and 100 thin clients using VDI.
Only 100 devices are used at a
time to access 100 VMs running
Windows Vista or Windows XP.

Scenario 4 Occasional Home Users

Scenario

100 Employees
(each a named user of thin client at
work)

My company has 100 employees

who are the primary users of 100
thin clients covered under
Windows VDA at work. These
employees occasionally work from
home and access the corporate
VMs via VDI from their personal
home machine

For thin clients covered with Microsoft Office SA, no additional
license required for home use covered under Roaming Use

Scenario 6 Roaming Users

Scenario
My company has 300 users who
need to access our VDI
environment via 300 thin clients.
These 300 users also need to
access their VDI desktops and
Microsoft Office applications from
non-corporate machines, such as
Internet kiosks and their home PCs.

VDI Suites

Licenses

Rationale

300 Windows VDA licenses

All thin clients accessing VDI must be licensed

On VDI desktops, Windows VDA has roaming rights for the single
primary user, so all non-corporate PCs outside the network are
covered for the 300 users

300 Microsoft Office SA licenses

All thin clients accessing Microsoft Office must have a license

Microsoft Office SA has Roaming Use Rights for the single
primary user, so all non-corporate PCs outside the network are
covered for the 300 users
Each access device needs to be licensed for the VDI server and
management infrastructure

300 licenses for VDI Suites (Standard or Premium)

VDI Suites are device based, and also support roaming rights, so no
additional licensing for the public machines

Scenario 7 Contractor-Owned PCs

Scenario

100 Contractors
Jan - June

100 Contractors
June - Dec

My company has 100 contractors

who are working for 6 months, and
then 100 different contractors are
employed for the other 6 months.
Each contractor will have one PC
(owned by the contractor) to
access our corporate VMs via VDI.

Rationale

Windows
License

100 Windows VDA licenses

Each contractor-owned PC will require a Windows VDA license,

which comes with 90-day permanent reassignment rights

Microsoft

100 Microsoft Office licenses

All devices accessing Microsoft Office require a license for it, which
comes with 90-day reassignment rights

VDI Suites
License

100 VDI Suite licenses (Standard or Premium)
