Lesson 3
Mixtures and Solutions

Objective
Identificar la energa como la capacidad para mover o
cambiar las cosas para comprender que sin ella no
podramos realizar las actividades diarias..
Learning objective:
Reconoce las mezclas y combinaciones con el fin de
identificar el mtodo apropiado de separacin
Biblical principle
Genesis 1:18
And to rule over the day and over the night,
and to divide the light from the darkness: and
God saw that it was good.

Exodus 14:21

the LORD
caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all
that
night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters
were divided

Mixture
A mixture is made when two or more
substances are combined.
GENERAL PROPERTIES OF A MIXTURE:
The components of a mixture can be
easily separated
The components each keep their original
properties
The proportion of the components is
variable

TYPES OF MIXTURES
HOMOGENEOUS:

used to describe substances that look the

same throughout. homogeneous
substances have one phase and uniform
composition.
HETEROGENEOUS:

used to describe substances in which you

can see more than one color or type of
matter. heterogeneous substances have
more than one phase and a nonuniform
composition.

Solutions
Is where one of the substances dissolves in the

other. The substance that dissolves is called

the solute. The substance that does not
dissolve is called the solvent.
Solutions are often classified as being either
saturated
unsaturated
supersaturated.
it is important to note that all of these solutions
will still be clear and homogeneous.

SATURATED SOLUTIONS

have the maximum amount of solute dissolved

in them. no more solute can be made to
dissolve.
UNSATURATED SOLUTIONS

have less than the maximum amount of solute

dissolved in them.
SUPERSATURATED SOLUTIONS

have more than the maximum amount of

solute dissolved in them. this is not normally
possible.

Others Mixtures
SUSPENSIONS:

are heterogeneous mixtures of a solid and a

liquid in which the solid does not dissolve.
EMULSIONS:

are a special type of suspension. this mixture

consists of two liquids that do not mix.
since the liquids do not mix, emulsions are
heterogeneous.
