CONQUESTS AND EMPIRE

BUILDING
Sargon the Great
For a brief time around 3000 B.C., the strong
city-state of Uruk controlled all of Sumer.
However, control of the city-state soon returned
to the local kings. Eventually, an enemy from
outside of Sumer came to conquer, or take over,
the Sumerian civilization by force. In about 2350
B.C. the city states had to battle a people from
central Mesopotamia whose leader was known
as Sargon.

Sargon had once served in the army of the

king of Kish, a city-state in Sumer. Around
2350 B.C. Sargon killed the king in battle.
He then gathered his own army and
conquered the other Sumerian city-states.
The Sumerians lost control over their citystates and their civilization fell.

TIME LINE OF THE CONQUESTS

AND THE EMPIRE BUILDING
2350 B.C.

Sargon continued his conquests

beyond
Sumer.
He
gained
control of an area from what is
now Iran, in the east, to what is
now
Turkey
and
the
Mediterranean Sea, in the west.
By doing this, Sargon built the
worlds first empire.

2345 B.C.

As symbol of Sargons absolute

authority, he ordered that every
boundary pillar and city wall be
brought down within his empire.
The empire was ruled from the
capital city of Akkad in the
central Euphrates River valley.
For this reason, the lands united
by Sargon became known as the
Akkadian Empire.

2340 B.C.

Sargon maintained his rule by using

the force of his army and by the
organization of his government. He
was one of the first powerful rulers
to keep a standing army.
Before that time, people earned
their living from other jobs and
served as soldiers only in times of
war.
Sargon
carefully selected
people to govern the city-state for
him. He chose officials who he knew
would remain loyal to the rule of
Akkad.

THE END OF THE AKKADIAN

EMPIRE
2294 B.C.

Others in world history who wanted to

become powerful leaders would follow
Sargons example. Sargon ruled the
Akkadian Empire for 56 years. After his
death, the empire lasted more than 200
years. That is why he is remembered as
Sargon the Great.

THE RISE OF THE BABYLON

EMPIRE
Causes
Innovations
Later Akkadian rulers found it difficult to keep control
over the vast area of their empire. In 2125 B.C. leaders
in the Sumerian city-state of Ur rebelled against
Akkadian rule. The battles brought an end to the
Akkadian Empire.
For a time, Mesopotamia thrived under the rulers of Ur.
However, the region drifted back into conflict and
disorder. By about 1900 B.C. a group called the
Amorites gained control of southern and central
Mesopotamia.
The Amorites were led by the mighty king of Babylon.
Like the Akkadian Empire, the empire of the Amorites
was named for its capital city Babylon. It was called the
Babylonian Empire.

Taxation:
system created in which
people are made to pay for the running of
their government.

Centralized government:
The Babylonian Empire was governed under a
single authority.
