For your reflection

O Lord, our Lord, Your greatness is seen in all the

world!
Your praise reaches up to the heavens;
It is sung by children and babies.
Your are safe and secure from all your enemies;
You stop anyone who opposes you.
When I look at the sky, which You have made,
At the moon and the stars, which you set in their
placeswhat is man, that you think of him;
mere man that you care for him?

Yet you made him inferior only to Yourself,

You crowned him with glory and honor.
You appointed him ruler over everything You made;
You placed him over all creation: sheep and cattle, and
the wild animals too; the birds and the fish and the
creatures of the seas.
O Lord, our Lord, Your greatness is seen in all the
world!

Earth Science
An Introduction

Earth Science

- is a consolidated study of the history of the

Earth, its solid parts, its atmosphere, its
hydrosphere, and even its neighbors in the
outer space.

Significance of Studying Earth Science

The earth plays a vital role in todays

constantly changing world.

Most human activities are related to the
natural surroundings, thus we need to
study earth science
To have a better science background with
relevant information about the environment
To know the present characteristics as well as
the history of the earth
To be aware of natural phenomena like
tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunami,
volcanic eruptions, etc.
To be prepared, informed, and make responsible
decisions regarding environmental issues and
problems
To be updated with the latest development of the
universe beyond earth.

Geology
- is the study of the

earth, including the

transformations it
has undergone.
involves a very
broad area of
study; (1) physical
geology and (2)
historical geology.

Physical geology focuses

on the following areas
(1) The solid part of the

Earth, which includes

soils, rocks and
minerals
(2) Earths surface
processes (i.e.
hydrologic cycle,
mass wasting,
erosion and
weathering)
(3) Earths internal
processes (i.e.
tectonics and
volcanism)

Historical geology is mainly

concerned with how the
Earth has evolved by
investigating its life-forms
through fossils (remains of
plants and animals
preserved on the Earths
crust).

Oceanography
- is the study of the oceans
-

and seas.
it deals with the physical
aspects of the ocean, their
chemical composition,
inhabitants, structure and
interaction with the
environment.
It concentrates on the
following areas:
(1) physical,
(2) chemical and
(3) geologic aspects of
oceans.

Meteorology
- is the study of the
earths atmosphere
including all
phenomena that
are relevant to the
atmosphere.

Astronomy
- deals with the
objects in outer
space including the
sun, moon, stars,
planets and other
heavenly bodies.

The major areas have their own branches or

specializations. Some of them are as follows:

Geology
Geophysics (applies the physics
concepts to study the earth)
Geochemistry (applies chemistry to
study the earth)
Mineralogy (study of minerals)
Petrology (study of rocks)
Paleontology (study of fossils)

Meteorology
Climatology (study of weather)

Astronomy
Cosmology (study of the universe)
