Introduction
In order to avoid the use of
petroleum products and to feel the
touch of Technology, Imagine a car
without an internal combustion
engine ,steering wheel, brake &
accelerator pedals.
Here is a one called HY-WIRE,
whose development is in progress,
and is done by GENERAL MOTORS.

Introduction
Hy-Wire cars are developed by combining
Hydrogen fuel cell with Drive By Wire
Technology.

History
Basically The Drive by Wire concept was
derived by the concept Fly by Wire which is
employed in fighter jets and in all Aero planes
such as Airbus family and Boeing's 777.
General Motors has revealed a first look at
Hy-wire cars on Feb 2002.
Hy-wire cars are Exhibited in North
American International Auto Show in Detroit and
the Geneva Motor Show. And also to the public at
the Paris Motor Show.

Architecture

Every piece of equipment that actually move

the car along the road is housed in an 28 cm thick
aluminum chassis known as the skateboard.

Basic parts
A. Rare Crush Zone
B. Universal Docking
Connection
C. Control System
D. Body Attachments
E. Heat Dissipation
F. Fuel Cell System
G. Wheel Motors
H. Front Crush Zone

Working principle

Brake by Wire

Power
Fuel Cell
A fuel cell is an electrochemical energy
conversion device which converts the chemicals
hydrogen and oxygen into water, and in the
process it produces electricity. This Produced
electricity is utilized as power to the Hy-wire cars.

How hydrogen fuel cell works ?!

Chemistry of a Fuel Cell
Anode side:
2H2 => 4H+ + 4e-

Cathode side:
O2 + 4H+ + 4e- => 2H2O

Net reaction:
2H2 + O2 => 2H2O

working.

Fuel cell stack capability

One fuel cell only puts out a little bit
of power. The fuel-cell stack in the
Hy-wire is made up of 200 individual
cells connected in series, which
collectively provide 94 kilowatts of
continuous power and 129 kilowatts
at peak power. The compact cell stack
is kept cool by a conventional radiator
system that's powered by the fuel
cells themselves.

Drive by wire control

The computer connects to the body's
electronics through a single universal docking
port. It transmits a constant stream of electronic
command signals from the car controller to the
central computer, as well as feedback signals
from the computer to the controller.

Steer by Wire
The driver's control unit, X-drive is a lot
closer to a video game controller than a
conventional steering wheel. The controller has
two grips, positioned to the left and right of a
small LCD monitor. To steer the car, you glide the
grips up and down lightly.

Accelerate by Wire
In order to accelerate, the driver as to just
throttle the grips, as we do in our bikes ,thus
one of our leg will be free while driving. when
grips are throttled motion sensors will send the
signals to main computer in the skateboard
which rises the RPM of motor coupled to
wheels.

Brake by wire
When driver squeeze either grip, it is
interpreted by the control system and translated
into requests for braking force on each wheel by
hydraulic pressure and also to reduce the speed
of drive motor .This system provides for
integration of ABS. However there is no clutch,
even the other leg is also free.

Specification
Top speed: 161 kmph
Weight: 1,898 kg
Chassis length: 4.3 meters
Chassis width: 1.67 meters
Chassis thickness: 28 cm
Wheels: eight-spoke, light alloy wheels.
Tires: 51-cm in front and 56-cm in back
Fuel-cell power: 94 kilowatts continuous,
129 kilowatts peak
Fuel-cell-stack voltage: 125 to 200 volts
Motor: 250- to 380-volt three-phase
asynchronous electric motor

Safety Assessments

The Injuries Caused by the

mechanical Steering Wheels are
eliminated.
Sophisticated side and front safety
air bags are used.
A
second
monitor
gives
information about climate control
and navigation information which
assist the driver for safety driving.
Vehicles are equipped with front
and rare
crush energy absorbing zone.

Advantages
Flexibility in interior design and control

placement
Enhanced braking as the vehicle can
monitor and modulate brake pressure at
each wheel.
Replacing the steering wheel and column
with a joystick, may help to reduce injuries.
Designs which allow better reaction times
for drivers.
The radically new architecture with the
front and rear panels are made of
transparent glass helps in clear view of
road .

Hurdles for Hy-Wire Cars

An electrical failure May Lead to total loss

of control. In order to Compensate it driveby-wire cars will need back-up power
supplies and redundant electronic
linkages.
Energy-efficient methods for producing,
transporting and storing hydrogen for the
onboard fuel-cell stacks.
Storing of Hydrogen in strong Metal
Container will leads to the increase in
weight of the car.

Conclusion
Implementing this Cars,

environmental pollution can be

reduced..
It can replace the conventional
energy resources.
By Adopting this concept in all future
Cars we can reduce accidents to
considerable extent.
Greater comfort ability can be
achieved.

General Motors says it fully intends to

release a production version of the car in
2010

we shall expect it earlier as

possible....
