Biographical background

He was born in Glencoe, Illinois, the son of Andrew

MacLeish, a prosperous dry-goods merchant, and Martha
Hillard, a college professor. Andrew MacLeish was a
reserved, stern father whose lack of attention to his son
may have generated Archibald's fierce drive to succeed.
MacLeish spent his childhood on a seventeen-acre estate
on Lake Michigan. He was a somewhat rebellious though
industrious child who needed, his mother judged, the
discipline of a private school; he therefore attended
Hotchkiss from 1907 to 1911. At Yale (1911-1915) he
majored in English, wrote poetry, and was heavily involved in
campus literary, social, and athletic activities.

Pada puisi itu juga menceritakan tentang perjuangan para prajurit demi
perdamaian negaranya. Para prajurit itu berjuang hingga ajal menjemput
mereka. Mereka mengharapkan perdamaian dan harapan. Mereka juga
menginginkan agar para generasi penerusnya senantiasa melanjutkan
perjuangannya. karena mereka berpikir, sekarang bukan mereka yang
bicara, tapi para penerus yang masih hidup.

At the word They say, Our deaths are not ours,

They say,
Whether our lives and our deaths were for peace and a new hope
or for nothing
we cannot say. it is you who must say this.
At those word describe that the struggle for peace soldiers country. The
soldiers fought until their death. They expect peace and hope. They
also want the next generation to continue the struggle continues.
because they think, now instead they are talking, but the next
generation.

Pada puisi itu juga terdapat pesan bahwa para pejuang(prajurit) itu telah meninggal dunia.
Mereka mengharapkan nyawa mereka mempunyai nilai bagi para pemuda yang masih
hidup. Para pejuang juga mengharapkan agar perjuangan mereka tidak sia-sia.
Ketidaksiaan itu dengan diwujudkannya perdamaian dan harapan baru
The words contained in the message that the fighters (soldiers) had died. They expect
their lives have value for the youth who are still alive. The fighters also hoped that
their struggle was not in vain. it is the realization of peace and new hope.
