How to Harness Wind Energy?
Wind Turbines

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

What physical conditions can affect the

generated voltage by DIY wind
turbine?

OBJECTIVE:

1. To create awareness to the public

about the importance of renewable
energy.
2. To reduce carbon footprint of
generating electricity.
3. To propose the use of wind energy to
generate electricity.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Wind turbine extract energy
from wind
Wind power converts kinetic
energy > wind to generate
electricity or mechanical power.

2 Types of wind turbines

the horizontal axis wind
turbines (HAWT)
the vertical axis wind turbine
(VAWT)
HAWT - commonly used
- fan styled blades
VAWT - egg beater style

MATERIALS:

Plastic bottle
Tin cans
Dynamo
Diodes
Wall fan

METHOD USED:
Manipulating the number of blades (3, 4, 5 Blades)
Speed of the wall fan (3 blades only)
Measure voltage generated

PROCEDURE
1)

Obtain a dynamo

2)

The making of the blades

3)

Mounting of the blades (Using glue)

4)

Wind turbine placed in front of the wall fan.

Experiment:
1. Fan speed remained constant
. Number of blades varied (3,4, 5
blades)
. Voltage generated recorded.
Experiment:
1. Wind turbine with 3 blades
.Fan speed is manipulated
.Voltage generated recorded

DISCUSSION
1. Fan speeds versus average value of generated
turbine
o Faradays law
o Fan speed increase, change in (B)external
magnetic field and (A)area of coil increase
and (t)change of time decrease, thus
incresing the induced voltage.
Why not increase significanly ?
Area of blades
Shapes of blades

2. Number of blades versus average value of

generated turbine
o Fan speed increase , induced voltage
SHOULD increase, but constant.
This is because of ,
Number of blades increase, dynamo
turn too fast , magnet inside does

not

cut through flux completely

CONCLUSION
1. Fan speed increase, generated
voltage increase
2. Number of blades increase,
generated voltage constant

SUGGESTION

Better materials
Stronger magnet
