Unified technical file (UTF)
MAN B&W Diesel

Advantages:

Technical files equal for all licensees. Required by ship-owners.

Onboard survey by engine performance readings and component
check.
Remarks:
Some engine builders have in the past used a component setting tolerance
method instead of engine performance. If the operator adjust the engine, the
engine might be out of compliance using this method.
The ship owner should check the supplied TF for Component ID numbers. If the
UTF is not followed it will be much more difficult for the owners to purchase spare
parts in the future and still be in compliance with Annex VI
We suggest that all owners check the TF and contact MAN B&W Diesel to clarify
any problems.

On-Board Survey Methods

MAN B&W Diesel

components and evaluation of performance)

OR

simplified measurement method

OR

MAN B&W Diesel

continuous NOx monitoring method (for periodical

surveys only)

Parameter check method

MAN B&W Diesel

Philosophy:
It is not necessary to measure the NOx level for a
pre-certified engine in order to demonstrate
compliance for with the NOx emission level
Check of settings, components and operating
values can provide an easy means of deducing the
emissions performance of the engine

Or

Or

MAN B&W Diesel

(4100/PHP)

IMO

SUBSTANTIAL MODIFICATION (old engines)

Any modification made to an engine, which increases its
existing emission characteristics established by the
simplified measurement method described.

Please note that if the NOx emission is increased by installing

slide fuel valves in vessels constructed before Jan. 1st 2000,
the modification is to be considered a substantial modification
(Technical Code 1.3.2.2), and therefore the IMO rules for NOx applies.
MAN B&W Diesel can assist you in obtaining the required documentation.
To do so, it is necessary to carry out a NOx measurement on board
before and after the modification.
If you wish to have these measurement done, please contact our technical Service department.

Emission Control
MAN B&W Diesel

How can emissions be controlled ?

Primary methods (Engine produces less NOx)
1) Engine adjustments
2) Engine process modifications
Water Injection; Water emulsified fuel
EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)
SAM (Humid Air Motor, humidification of scavenge air)

Secondary methods (NOx is removed after the engine)

SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction NOx)

Comments Water Emulsification

MAN B&W Diesel

The effect of water emulsion on NOx is known (a rough guideline

gives 1% NOx reduction per 1% water content)

A standard FIE (pump-valve-nozzle) system is used for on-off
operation
A size optimized FIE present the best sfoc & emissions trade-off

Fuel-oil consumption penalty roughly 1-2% per 10% NOx reduction

May increase HC and smoke (PM)
Requirement for fresh water supply and a number of fuel-system
changes to be considered (fx higher heating & fuel-line pressure
capacity for viscosity control)

The control system/governor needs to be designed for safe operation

in case of emergencies/failures

Running on DO requires additive for stabilizing the emulsion

Water emulsion (FWE) has not yet been long term tested on the ME
engine
