The Optimising process

(for Project Development Process)
Basic Fundamentals and Theories

Understand the status of the development process

Develop a vision of the desired process
Establish a prioritised list of process-improvement
actions
Produce a plan to accomplish the required actions
Commit the resources to execute the plan
Start over again
Those who refuse to learn the lessons of history are
condemned to repeat them

Management Activities
Basic Fundamentals and Theories

According to Mintzberg (1970s)

1. The Interpersonal roles: dealing with people
Figurehead - performs ceremonial duties
Leader - hire, train, encourage and motivate staff
Liaison- make contacts with persons outside the
manager's own unit

2. The informational roles: handles information related to
the department
Monitor compare performance of the unit - against
internal and external
Disseminator - pass along valuable information to
others unit
Spokesperson - pass information along to those
outside the unit

resources
Negotiator - resolve dispute both within the unit and
between the unit and its environment

Variables in tension
Basic Fundamentals and Theories

The diagram illustrates:

that each variable is not mutually exclusive of the
others
any change or pressure to one variable will affect the
others
For example, higher quality = higher cost

The PM has to know how to maximize the project

The Big Picture

Basic Fundamentals and Theories

All IT projects involve a web of communication

How much depends on the project

large projects may have a steering committee

small projects may involved the user and

analyst/designer

Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) this

methodology includes: analysis, design, programming,
testing and installation of software

The Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) is

contained within the overall Project

The project lifecycle is thus a container for the SDLC
